HR 1161: Contact your Congressman

Posted by Nancy Hawks Miller, Mar 31, 2011.

Don't like to get political, but distributors are penning another really damaging bill, HR 1161, the so-called “CARE Act.”  This is yet, another anti-shipping bill that may limit your access to your favorite wines and put small, family wineries out of business. Contact your Congressman!

OK, so that I don't have to do a lengthy Google-search-and-read, can you kindly explain how this bill relates to earlier versions like this one?

To end all direct wine shipments, and otherwise determine the fate of interstate wine shipments?

Hi! I think Tom Wark explains what's wrong with this bill better than I can.

already sent a response to my rep, and there are more important issues than this that Congree should be dealing with IMO.

I wish I could contact my Congressperson, but I live in Washington DC so I don't have one.  (Well I have one but she's non-voting).  So nobody in Congress cares what I think.

I agree that there are more important issues for Congress to deal with, but I'm glad you contacted your congressman. If the distributors get their way and put the kibash on direct shipping quite a number of small wineries and breweries (read small businesses) may go under. They're too small for the distributors to bother with, but they won't be able to ship directly to consumers. I've worked for wineries most of my career so it has a special importance for me :-)
