How much do you drink?

Posted by thepenas, Jan 7, 2010.

I am curious as to how much wine the typical wine lover consumes a week, if I have a glass or two a night should I be signing up for AA?

I drink with my wife average one bottle of wine a week. It's not a lot I think but I try to choose better

...it depends on the week, but it is not uncommon to put back only 1 a week, or 8. If I am really wanting a good night, I will do 2 bottles to myself. otherwise I keep to a bottle/night whenever I do drink wine.

Right now I drink on average a couple of bottles of wine a week, and the equivalent of another bottle of beer and Sake. There have been other times when I drink more (probably a bottle a day average in the first years of this past decade, with other alcoholic beverages on top of that) or less (maybe one bottle a month during a couple of phases). That's at home. Consumption will go up if I'm going out a lot, and really go up if I'm traveling in areas where there's a lot of good wine...

I share 1 bottle a night with my wife where my part is about 3/4 of the bottle. On the weekend or if we have guests this could double. I am trying to cut back on other alcoholic drinks, but usually have a brandy with my espresso at lunch break (just to get me motivated to get back to work).

Admittedly, I may have a problem. I'd say I average a bottle or two a night; some nights more, some nights less.

Not enough.

Only kidding.

That really depends. Last week I was on vacation and had a glass or two with lunch, a glass or two wth a bit of cheese around 5 pm, then a glass or three with dinner, and perhaps a glass after dinner. I wouldn't recommend that for any length of time though.

Before starting this job, which keeps me i the office quite late on most nights, I routinely drank 5 bottles or so a week, and I still surprise myself on occasion when I polish off well over a bottle, maybe even two, during the course of a long, indulgent dinner event

I try to drink a glass of wine every day, but that's not always the case -- sometimes I literally don't have the time to drink a glass by the time I get home, and sometimes I find myself drinking 5 glasses before I get home (I work in the arts, so quite often their are receptions at events I'm working at, and I've learned to keep pace with the donors.) In general, I'd say 1-2 bottles a week is my average, 4-5 being the occasional max. If I open a bottle that immediately speaks to me and says delicious, it can be difficult to restrain myself and only drink a few glasses. At the same time, I've also learned the hard way that sometimes bottles won't survive the night, assuming I even get to them the next day. On the other hand, several bottles would never have achieved the fond memory I have for them if I didn't let them sit for a day or two. The oenovore's dilemma!

3 to 4 when i'm home and not on the road working, Summer months might see weeks where 10 + bottles are drank with friends through out the week

My wife and I go through about two-three bottles per week. We have our table wine selection and our higher dollar selection. We love wine with dinner, heck we love wine at anytime during the day.

Special occasions, wine tastings and holidays excluded, the household usually consumes about 2-3 bottles per week. The modest output is dictated by the need for mental clarity during most weekdays - the majority of our wine being drunk on weekends and days off.

This little bit of temperance allows us to be a bit more relaxed and able to savor the wine at times when pressures are lessened.

it seems the "it depends" attitude towards how much wine i drink seems to fit with me. i tend to have 1 to 2 (usually 2 ) or three glasses a night if the wine is interesting!! socially...well the "usual tendacy" can tend to go out the window!!

It is really interesting how consumption varies from country to country (and from person to person!). On the Italian country-side, most people drink wine with lunch and dinner, every day. But I really do not know anybody in this country that does not have wine with dinner every day. In northern Europe, that is considered high-risk behaviuor, drinking a glass of wine every day, even though supposedly it is good for you. Alcohol will harm you if you get drunk (quite common in northern Europe too). Anyway, my point is, what is a normal wine (alcohol)-consumption is very much a social construction varying from geopraphy, social group etc.

Very much so, Italienska. Where are you located now? America definitely still suffers from vestigial Puritanism, whether vis a vis sex (from Clinton to Tiger Woods, with all those outed political, entertainment or other celebs in between) or alcohol. Growing up in California, it was generally considered uncool to display any outward signs of drunkenness, even as a student at college. In Japan drunken behavior is generally accepted and forgiven within certain constraints, so much so that you have to watch who you're standing next to on trains coming home on certain nights. During the first three days of the year, a lot of people are drinking Sake (or other forms of alcohol these days) from the morning as part of their New Year's celebrations.

Yes I agree with Italienska. I live in Poland where in past before political system change in 1999 Polish people drink a lot of vodka. I think it was in all this east Europe region normal. Right now we have totaly diferent situation most of young people work wery hard and they don't drink often any alkohol becuase it is: not fasion, it create a visio that someone can have any problem with alkohol, we don't have a time becuase still work od chaising for carier but we still don;t have any normal habits to drink wine. I think that wine have a good potencial here but it has to go so time.

Spot on dmcker. When I was an expat lunching lady in Tokyo and Hong Kong the British women (and some of we Australians) would always have a glass of wine with lunch to raised eyebrows from the Americans. My second glass would turn raised eyebrows to definite frowns and AA was mentioned once.

I guess I'm a little different to most as I have diet restraints and am only allowed 5 glasses a week......in saying that I could do a tasting with up to and inclusive of 200 wines for a trade day tasting (osmosis can be a factor but a straight glass has more of an effect).
Thankfully the spittoon is never far away. I would like to be able to drink more but the ends doesn't justify the means.
It also takes me too long to get over it, trying to push the envelope just doesn't work for me anymore :- ( .

I would say I have 3 - 4 bottles a week. Got to squeeze in some beer as well.

Since my wife doesn't drink wine, the baton passes to me to finish a bottle before it's been open too long. For that reason (wink, wink) I'll drink one bottle over 2 nights. Of course if we're having dinner with friends (or just about any other weekend excuse) that can easily ramp up to a 1.5 to 2 bottles by myself.
