How do you add a wine to the Snooth database?
Posted by MTB, Apr 26, 2009.

Phil, Greg & Co -

I've recently sampled some local wines here in Connecticut that aren't in the Snooth database. Am I able to add wines to the database so I can link them to the CT site and post reviews for other readers? And if so, how do I do that? Thanks! - Marguerite (MTB)

Hi Marguerite,

It's simple actually. Just go here

http://www.snooth.com/add-wine/

Add you details and save the wine. The region tree for Connecticut may not be complete though so you may have to use only the state as a region. let me know if you have any further questions.

It worked perfectly. Thank you! For Connecticut, I think the state as the region is probably sufficient. Cheers.

Marguerite - glad to hear its working well. We're doing a region overhaul, so if you notice a missing region let us know

thanks

Philip - How granular do you want to get with regions? For example, in Connecticut you could go below the state level to either AVA or just East vs. West (which is how the wine trails are organized), but I'm not sure how helpful that level of detail would really be for people. But if you are thinking of more specific regions, or trying to organize by AVA, let me know, and I'll keep my eye out for missing regions. - Thanks! Marguerite

Down to the specific AVA would be ideal actually.

AVAs work for me, but how do you deal with AVAs that cross state lines - such as the Southeastern New England AVA, which encompasses parts of MA, CT, and RI. - are you planning to incorporate both into the region name, or forgo states and just stick with AVAs? And overlapping AVAs, such as the Long Island AVA and the North Fork of Long Island AVA - which takes precedence? And if a winery falls outside an AVA, I'm assuming the state would then be considered the region? Sorry for so many questions, just want to be sure I understand what direction you want to go in before I send in any suggestions for missing regions. Thanks. MTB

MTB -- Good thinking. We've definitely gone over this a couple of times here at Snooth, and we're at a middle ground that allows us to keep developing the platform while we plan our move to the final goal.

For now, we're trying to stick to the most honest version of hierarchy with one parent. So in your case, the Southeastern New England AVA would point all the way to the United States. When you send us the data, please feel free to write it like:

US > MA; CT; RI > Southeastern New England

And we'll save the data for later when we move to the final solution. It will show up on the site as:

US > Southeastern New England

The final goal is for a wine to be assigned to multiple regions, and for a region to have multiple parent regions. That should account for all of the cases we'll find.

For overlapping AVAs, you'll have to pick one for the wine assignment. It shouldn't matter for region hierarchy, as they both probably have the same parent region.

Maybe we should try and put together a Snooth tour of the Connecticut wine trails this summer!

Maybe rent a van/bus to take us from winery to winery and some particularly intrepid folks could ride their bikes and us the bus as a sag wagon?

Worth investigating?
