Posted by hawaii4tweety, Oct 29.

Hi. I'm new here and looking for 1979 red wine or champagne for my best friend's B-day.
I got one 1979 wine from UK but label was not great condition. :(
(or most 1979 label may not good condition??)
My friend has collecting bottle and label after drink the wine also, I would like to find nice label on the bottle too.
I've been searching on web but could not find it yet.
Price is too expensive!!!
Looking for 0 ~ a little over $100. I got my wine from UK was about $60

Anyone help me out? Please....
She likes bold and dry type of wine but as long as 1979 year on the label, I do not care too much this time.

Thanks :)

Guessing that you're based in Hawaii, you should still be able to find some Californians from '79, though anything good, in drinkable condition, is likely to go past your $100 budget. Bordeaux is also a reasonable possibility, though '79 was only a so-so vintage and you won't find a lot that's drinking all that well now, especially at the lower end of the market. Champagne is likely to be less easy to find. Run some Google searches for '79 vintages of any number of California and Bordeaux and Champagne wines and see what pops up from whatever source.

I also guess that this is a birthyear, or some such, and you can't change the vintage? Sounds like a lot of trouble to go to for a '79 Bordeaux... ;-)

Here's an example of a search for a '79 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon, which should be drinking fine now if it has been stored properly:
http://www.google.co.jp/search?q=1979+Mayacams+Cabernet+Sauvignon&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
There's a $75 option near the top of the search list.

More important than label condition, provenance will be a serious issue if you're concerned about drinkability. Who had the wine, and how was it stored?

Unless all your friend really wants is the label...

Here's a list of 1979 wines available in the USA under around $100.

As far as what to buy 1979 was a somewhat uniformly good, but not great vintage, in the worlds main wine growing regions.

I prefer Barolo and Barbaresco above all, but that is a personal preference. Brunello di Montalcino is quite excellent but may be difficult to find.

California Cabernet id generally going to be a better bet than Bordeaux.

Here are some specific wines I like

And

Which is a recently released, very sweet dessert wine.

Strange.

I clicked on the link in both yours and my post and both worked. Tech issue?

The link took me to Snooth, but no bottles showed...

Until I changed the default 'Japan' in the 'Show Wines Available In...' field to the United States (first '79 a Montilla-Moriles sherry for $27) or All Countries (first '79 a Henri Jayer Eschézeaux for 10 euros ?!).

My bad.

As a separate issue, what's with that 10-euro Eschezeaux? If the merchant thinks it's that far gone, why is he even selling it?

I buy older wines from winebid.com almost weekly. In fact, I have a 1978 Chateau Siran on it's way as we speak, for less than $40. The descriptions are very accurate and they always have a large selection. The auctions end every Sunday.

Here is the search query for 1979, there are 37 bottles from 79 this week:
