BTW, the best way to become an "expert" regarding wine is to taste all you can. Reading and talking about it are poor substitutes. Take every opportunity to taste everything you can, regardless of price. If you're at a bar, I'm sure people are coming in all the time to show wines. Many bars typically get their wine from their liquor sales reps, which isn't always a good way to get decent wine, so tell the reps to make an effort to bring something good, rather than a perfunctory cheap white and red.

Dave, as usual GregT is providing excellent advice. Experience is the best teacher, and the only way you can get 10 years of experience is to experience for 10 years.
