Greetings! Just joined up on this great site and I'm looking forward to meeting and chatting with many of my fellow wine lovers! I used to work in the industry and have had the pleasure of sampling many different wines from many different regions of the world. I've also tried many different varieties/styles, and am currently exploring the wonderful world of Port, which I never really had a chance to get into before. I'm currently enjoying a couple of different Late Bottled Vintages and want to try more!
For me, there's nothing better than having friends over, cracking open several bottles of wine and trying many new products that might otherwise take months to get around to, or possibly never getting the chance to try! I just kicked off the summer solstice with a BBQ/Winefest this past weekend at home with friends....it was great!
We don't have any wineries where I am, save for a couple of fruit wineries North of where we live and a fruit winery in Maple Creek, SK, which I've been to for an afternoon....Great Sour Cherry Wine & Mead BTW!
Anyways, HELLO!.....chat with you all later!
Hello from Alberta!

Welcome and early in the game I want to let you know that I do enjoy great Port!
Please share your favourites and let me have your own opinion on White Port which I do think is sometimes under-estimated.
Thanks in advance!
And happy searching on the greatest wine-site...SNOOTH!!!!

Welcome to Snooth, I definitely can't wait to hear how your Port adventures are going. That's a journey I've yet to begin, myself; my exposure to Port has been woefully limited thus far.

@amour: Hello! My favorites thus far are the 2001 LBV Cockburn's & 2003 LBV Taylor Fladgate......I also have about a third of a bottle left of the Taylor Fladgate 20yr old Tawny. All excellent! I have yet to enjoy a white port but it is definitely on my radar. Alberta has a great selection of port available but the stores here in Medicine Hat won't commit to bringing it in.....Fonseca White is about the only one that I know of available in my area. I Will definitely let you know what I think of a dry Port once I get to trying it!
@Carly Wray: Hello to you too! Aside from the Ports that I'm currently enjoying (I still have a bit of my '01 LBV and just opened my '03, along with my 20yr), I have also had a bottle of Casal Dos Jordoes Organic 10yr Tawny (a gift that got me into Port).....it's good but it's not like the others that I currently have! I really love the rich cherry flavors that the LBVs bring and I'm told that a good LBV is much better value for the $$$ than a true vintage Port, but I'll judge that for myself once I bring myself to dishing out for a vintage :) I will keep you posted on my adventures!
On a side note, are either of you into or tried Madeira? I really like a nice 5yr Malmsey (just like X-Mas Cake) and have also had a less sweet but more balanced Bual....10yr I believe.

Summer solstice? A bit early, or are you just starting to ramp up to a serious blowout? Certainly some woud call it the best time of year where you are.
What wine do you like besides port? Not to beleaguer that delicious nectar from Oporto, which I also love, but it is a big wine world out there....

LOL! Oh no, it's the celebration of the season gradually arriving to June 21...I just like the term summer solstice! And you're right, this is the THE best time of the year...the super hot weather hasn't quite yet arrived.....25-28 degree weather....just right!
I like almost any wine out there, but of course it has to be in the right situation.....my favorite white is a crisp Riesling from Germany (my first love!), Austria and BC, who IMO has the most flavorful ones. Red would have to go to Pinot Noir, of which my favorite one to date is from Mirassou out of California! I also quite like South African Pinotages, but really if you put it in front of me, that's what I like......Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cab Sauv, Chardonnay, Merlot, Chianti Classico.....I love it all!
How about yourself?
