My New Years resolution:  Drink more wine than I buy.

I make that resolution every year.

Every year I fail.  So,I'll dust it off Dec. 31, 2019.

EMARK like your resolution I always say I am going to drink the wine I have I don’t need more bottles, so what do I do buy a case yesterday, I think the difference is I reluctant to drink my good wines, and go out and buy pop and pours

Hope everyone is recovering nicely from last nights celebrations.  Had maybe two dozen friends over (as per our usual) and ended up opening several of our nicer bottles.  No better way to enjoy a good bottle than with some of your best friends.

Happy New Year to all my Snooth buds, hopefully this sight will see some resurgence in 2019.

The 1st two were enjoyed by six of us with dinner, some marinated strip steaks, grilled asparagus and twice baked potatoes.  The next handful were opened for the general party goers to enjoy.  Later in the evening after the crowd thinned we popped the cabs and the Tablas as the folks that were left were some of our more wine geeky friends.

It's like moderating a debate.  You quickly learn people's knowledge and tastes and as the evening unfolds, you choose bottles appropriately ;)

The 2006 Scherrer cab was the one I wished I'd been there for.  Which was your favourite?  Was the CdP too young?

DV, it was a toss up between the Scherrer and the Spring Mtn, both have tons of layers and personality, both were still going strong, the Spring Mtn was bigger but the Scherrer more balanced.

I opened the CdP and t;he Cakebread several hours earlier, both were still quite young but had opened up enough to be extremely enjoyable with the meal.

The Cakebread  Rubaiyat is an interesting wine.  The way they vary the Syrah/pinot noir content from year to year really shows that they play to the strengths of the vintage and vineyards the grapes are picked from.

How was the bottle?

Paul, I was a bit surprised when I saw the blend of the Rubaiyat, you don't normally see pinot blended with syrah and grenache but it works.  The wine was very good, a bit lighter than the CdP but still lots of bright red fruit and good acidity, it held its own with the strip steak.

Ayoub Winery out of Oregon blends Pinot with Cabernet Franc it is called Mojo. I asked him why he said they were his two favorite wines. It’s actually very good

My opinion of the Mojo was a souped up Pinot. The only place wine searcher shows it avaliable is at the winery at $75 a bottle.

There's a guy called Bryan Harrington who is a wonderful and inventive winemaker, he blends it with things like Trousseau, but does very tiny production and it's pretty hard to get outside of the Bay area.

I know it is already the 7th, but belated Happy New Year anyway.  I usually don't travel at Christmas/New Year for the very reason I suffered over the past 2 weeks... cold-like viruses and influenza bugs abound.

Yeah, I caught one - first time in at least 8 years.  But then, I travelled north into bone-dry, heated home environments and airplane air.  I am not particularly patient nor a particularly good patient.  Anyway, I should be fine in a few days... it just seems to take forever to shake these infections; I don't recall this problem as a younger person, but then age is almost certainly a factor - regardless of fitness and good hygiene etc.

Too much discussion to comment on at the moment, but maybe I'll take out that Omar Khayyam translation by Edward Fitzgerald (the 1859 translation from the original Medieval Persian - where wine is used as a metaphor for esoteric knowledge in the Sufi tradition).  I liked the comment by Jack about resolving to drink down all that fine wine stored in years gone by, but buying more pedestrian (but enjoyable) fare out of an irrational reluctance to touch those gems sitting on their sides!

Regarding the remarks on PN, the blends you mention are eccentric, but only by tradition.  The question then becomes: are you a traditionalist? - in this and other things, perhaps?  Very light Cabernet Franc could blend well with PN (I have tasted some cool climate versions of this and they are fine - but usually not something I would create if the PN vintage is a good one - or the vines themselves especially worthy.

But there are no rules but those of the palate, and blending can be quite a teaser of the tongue.
