Halloween Ideas

Posted by JonDerry, Oct 14, 2011.

Typically my least favorite holiday, but somehow this year I got roped into hosting a party for Halloween.

The idea of a wine related costume struck me as not really a great option, since everyone knows I like wine, but maybe I just haven't thought of the right theme.

So...any ideas on encorporating a wine theme into a Halloween costume?

Let's go ahead and scratch a wine bottle or grapes off the list up front.

Too bad you scratched the wine bottle theme off, because there are all sorts of options that could ensue, going with one of those oh-so-many tacky labels out there.

Getting yourself up as Bacchus/Dionysus would be where I'd start thinking (as you might tell from my avatar). Plenty of options to choose from there, so start Googling, my boy. Now since you're the host, you also might think how to turn the party into a proper Bacchanalia! Plenty of fun events and themes, though the ancient Greek mysteries were far more interesting, IMHO, than the Roman versions. Those latter folks just got too hardcore debauched too quickly and simply...  ;-)

Wow.. this is a hard one...  the thing that immediately came to mind to me was the French revolution (france is always on my mind nowadays)... Marie Antionette and Louis XVI as a couple costume?  I was reminded of A Tale of Two Cities, where that cart carrying wine poured into the street like blood, and the commoners grabbed up all they could.

Of course there's alway Bacchus or Dionysius?

Another idea, but not so great-  one year my sister and her boyfriend went as drunk driving crash victims.  Poor taste IMO.   Sorry,  I seem to be at a loss on this one.

You're a cork, your wife is a screw cap a/k/a Stelvin, and you duke it out. Of course, she has to endure "getting screwed" jokes all night, so maybe reverse that.

I don't think grapes is that bad an idea.  You can cover yourself in purple balloons and nothing else.  Could be painful if anyone decides to stop the grapes.

urrh 'stop' or 'stomp', Fox?  ;-)

Hatpins would also be bad....

Stop the grapes!

Gotta hate the lack of edit on here, have been a victim myself many a time.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, i'll be doing some further reserach. It'll be fun to plan it out, and of course i'll have to be serving some wine, but from my cellar, have to cap the purchases in the coming weeks with the NY trip next week and a Paso Robles venture coming shortly thereafter.

Well, at least it was obvious what I meant.  I was rushing to get done at work so I can pack for NYC and drink GdP's wine! I was even going to send dmcker a message privately but ran out of time.  Arrrgh.

Some of us could be cajoled into attending as first growth (Margaux is my personal favorite).  But if you are unable to drink me down now, don't expect to do so later.  I do not want to start something, but what reads here evokes more the contents of a junior high school suggestion box  than the stuff of sophisticated aesthetes.  I need more encouragement than this and I am coming to think that Snooth needs that encouragement as well.  This site is going rapidly downhill.

So you're too old for bacchanalia, are you zuf?  ;-)

One problem, though, might be the direct clash between the all hallows eve theme and the celebration of life that underlies the dionysian mysteries....

Zuf, I went through some of your latest tasting notes and they were a good read. I'm sure the more you participate the better the overall experience would be here on Snooth, we could especially use someone who fits the mold of a "wine snob", since no one else seems to want to volunteer.

Yeah, my guess is that a few remain in the closet... ;-)

Taking Fox's suggestion further, you could go as a cork and a corkscrew.

Go as a winemaker and stain your feet purple before the party, then walk around barefoot for the night with your pants rolled up!

Nice reviews zufrieden, nice nickname too iirc frieden means peace in German, this site is what you make it I guess, I use it mostly to catalogue everything I've tried for business purposes. Does anyone have any suggestions where to look on the posts for good discussion? There's a lot out there and it seems like a lot to go through it all.

Regards,

Joe
