Forums Search

Posted by RachelNYC, Dec 2, 2008.

The forums have become active enough that it has become difficult to find past threads. Is a Forum Search something that is in the Snooth Statement of Direction?

Yes! And very soon actually...

With over 6,000 posts its pretty hard to keep up with whats going on. So, yeah, there will be a search box, as well as some performance improvements - keep your eyes peeled - its scheduled for before 2009!

I can't wait to search for the phrase: "I can't wait to search for the phrase:"..."". Talk is indexed about every week now. It's awesome!

This is a cool new feature for sure - but...........how do you get to individual categories???

That was one of my questions too. Hopefully by the middle of next week we'll have that feature restored as a side bar. Bear with us but keep the comments coming!

Thirded. I just wrote, as a new post in Site Feedback (that I'll now not post separately):

Why aren't the items in the Category column links to limit the view to that category?

As it is, new posts that may not belong there will end up in Wine Talk, won't they?

@ccarpita: once a *week*? That doesn't seem frequent enough for me... even if a full-text index is a bit (time-)expensive, couldn't we at least get the subject headings and the users who who posted and commented indexed a bit more frequently?

Additionally, the graphic within an individual post still says "Back to Categories", but that's not what we're going back to now (except, I hope, contextually, soon): we're going back to an index.

Yay for Forums search! I was going to try and be patient, but I will join the bandwagon about wanting categories back. Like with most things, I didn't realize that I liked them so much until they were gone.

Gotta agree, search is great but I am just confused when I look at the forum page now. This whole thing has taught me a bit about my self, I need things organized with everything in it's place and I freak out a little when it's not :)
Again though - LOVE SEARCH!

Okay, I just discovered one problem... when I am on page 2 of the forum and I read a post and then hit "Back to categories" it goes back to page 1. I am having a hard time keeping track of what post I am on.

@gr: that was a bit slow, so I made it about 48 hours instead. You don't really need to index very recent content, since it's on the front page! Mostly, searching is useful for finding older content...although if you're a search-first-and-ask-questions-later type, then you want frequent indexing.

@all: it's a little unsettling to not have categories anymore, and we're going to add those back soon, but does anyone *need* categorical view? i'm curious as to how some of you are using the forums...

Category view (under the guise of filtering) will be in place for the roll out middle of next week

@oceank8: the problem with "Back to categories" has been fixed now, sorry about that!

Guys ... I'm using FireFox and the forums are appearing as one big list right now ... no categories just a list of posts. Is this a new feature? ;-)

Yup, it's our new style. A continuous feed from all the forums showing the active threads. This coupled with forum search, and a return of the forum categories next week, should make, reading, browsing, and finding threads much easier.

@Honda -- Snooth is best viewed using IE5 for Mac. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go get my shoe.

(Hahaha)
