Forums format suggestion.

Posted by VitaVinifera, Jan 23, 2011.

When a forum thread goes onto multiple pages, the links to click between pages (numbers and prev/next) are all at the top of the page.

Can you dup them to the bottom?  After all, I read down a thread and then need to scroll back up to click to the next page.

Unless I am just missing the ones on the bottom, in which case, nevermind.

That would make things user-friendly.

So consider it dismissed.

I am going to post a really long response here just so that everyone has to scroll back up... Oh, forget it, Snooth can make it inconvenient without my help.  Love the clean interface, love the community, but even some simple things don't quite get the attention that they need... that was a natural in user testing, yes?

Now, now we are being narky!

But I have to say some of the programming is a bit clumsy and the suggestion should be a relatively easy minor change for a junior programmer

Hey guys - thanks for the suggestion. The pagination links should be on top and bottom now.

Good, Mark. That will be a welcome improvement. I'm pretty much with Greg and Foxall, and don't think they're being snarky at all...

Mark - good show.  Thanks.

And please don't take offense.  Hell, if I'd known it were that easy to get something done here I'd have asked if you guys could add an edit function!

Thanks!  So much happier now and my mouse scroll knob gets a little rest.

Edit function? Don't push it or we'll take back the buttons.

GregT--someone has been posing as you and asking for an edit function... for a while.  I vote for edit function, too.

And I don't mean to be snarky.  Like I said, the clean interface, good.  Now the buttons at the bottom of the page, good.  If the database could be cleaned up a little, I would post more of my TNs here, but the same wine seems to show up more than once, making it a bit hard to pick where to put the TN.

Uh... GdP... YES, an EDIT function...  Many sites have them.  Not all of us are great at typing, or we are trying to put an idea or thought into words, and sometimes the final product does not appear to convey our  thoughts/ideas accurately.  Even writers for websites get to edit their work... How about us?  :-) :-)

Edit yes.  I like the pages at the bottom.  I'd also like to echo the coments about cleaning up the database.  Multiple entries, wines in the wrong region, cheese being listed as wine.  What is up?  Also, I took the time to input several wines into the database, and they seem to be gone now.  If you search for Humboldt, you get a different list than if you search Humboldt County.  Also, the best producers from this region are barely listed, while Coates is all over the thing.  Make it seem like that is all we have here in Humboldt.  The data that gets into your system from bots or whatever you call them is really to messy to be useful in some case and makes the site look un professional since it includes info that is factually wrong.  Like listing Aussie wine as if they are from Humboldt County.  I know we have been over this.  I know you are probably working on bigger issues.  But still, it is worth mentioning.  Is this something that you plan to address?  Ever?

Agreed that these are reasonable things to ask for.  A large portion of the data that we get comes directly from stores, in addition to the crawling operations.  We aim to be the most complete and useful database of wines, and having issues like these will lead us to fall short of our goal.  Be assured that it's a priority for us.

Given that the scope of the problem is very large, the best way to bring specific issues to our intention is to post in Site Feedback as you've been doing, and yes, be "snarky" sometimes.  We have thick skin and high expectations here.

Regarding the Edit function, I agree that this is (nearly) essential for a good forum, so it's in our sights.

Thanks for the positive response, CC. I would be curious, though, what are the issues that have delayed getting to the post-posting edit functionality? We've been talking about it for nearly 18 months here.... ;-)

@ ccarpita,

I have made long lists of wrong data in that I have found when I search for Humboldt, or Humboldt County.  I have sent those lists to Philip and GDP and or posted them in this section.  Some of those same errors are still present on the site today.  Between those lists, and the time I spent entering wines that no longer appear, I have spent hours doing work on the site.  After I sent in those lists, some of the items were corrected, but then the wrong data was back up within weeks.  I don't think this is data being provided by wineries.

I want to find this place useful.  I like the people here.  But, before I can suggest it to any of my friends, the quality of the data needs to be better.

I think that it might be unrealistic for Snooth, a for profit business, to ask that I take extra time away from my work to provide detailed lists of how the site is not working correctly.  If you want more input from me, please feel free to PM me here on the site, or email me.  My info is on my profile.

I don't mean to snarky.  There is a section for feedback.  This is honest feedback.  Did you want it sugar coated?  Ok, that was snarky.

Thanks for working to improve the site.

Glad to see that you are working on it.  Keep us posted with your progess, please.  I am serious about my offer to discuss offline, FWIW.

Andrew - we appreciate your comments. Data quality is important to us and something we continue to work on. It's probably a good time for for me to write down a "State of the Snooth Data" report so everyone knows where we stand today and where we want to be standing.

In other news, there have been a few upgrades made to the forum, some of which are overdue. We do hope everyone enjoys these updates, and we're looking forward to a new round of suggestions.

What are these updates to the forum, Mark?

And yes, I see the post-posting editing (re-editing?) capabilities now there. Might make the Edit button a little more clearly viewable, but otherwise great!
