Forum and Performance Updates

Posted by Chris Carpita, Jan 11, 2012.

Just a heads up: we've recently rolled out a new release, which was primarily aimed at speeding up the site.  Since the web server is a bit swamped now, you might not notice the change for a few hours.

Since we were consolidating a lot of redundant code, we changed the Forum editor to be consistent with the one in Publisher.  This means that the process for posting replies has changed a little bit.   Instead of posting once, then confirming, you'll have the opportunity to save a draft multiple times before you publish a response.  This means if you're writing a really long response, and the power goes out, or the browser redirects for no reason (I really hope that's not happening!), your forum reply will be safe and sound on Snooth's servers, ready for you to finish when you come back.

I know the changes might be a bit jarring, but I'm hoping that the benefits will outweigh the temporary loss of familiarity.   As always, feedback is welcome!

You have a window on the right that won't disappear.  Therefore, one can't read messages.  Is that a bug or a feature?  I try to read a PM and the right side of the screen is hidden behind "Popular Topics".

For my 2 cents, I'd say DON'T clutter the screen with menus, pop-ups, etc.  Just put small text at the top or the side with some drop-downs, rather than trying to think for the user.  Alternatively, let the user eliminate the clutter he or she doesn't want. And do something about the messages.

Thanks for the report GregT, and sorry you had issues with the messages.  This should be fixed now.

Hi, i had some problems with wine review, sometimes i can't save review and bottle rating.

I had another problem in the forum page, trying to edit a post two edit/reply windows appear and after saving nothing in my post is changed.

I'm on a Mac with OsX Lion and Firefox as browser.

Thanks for the reports, it looks like one bug fix caused another - adding reviews with glasses will work on the wine detail page now.  @giac - I think the forum bug is fixed as well, can you please confirm?

Negative, Chris.  In trying to add review/rating on the wine detail pages, the glasses are now completely gone and the "Save" button still does nothing.

If it is helpful these are the pages I'm at:

Angeline Cardonnay

Foley Pinot Noir

I am sorry but it is still not fixed. The green glasses have gone although it still says'set your rating' but clicking oin the SAVE button still does nothing.I am frustrated as this is the third time I have typed out a review for Chevalier Daviaud St.Emillion.I would like other Snooth users to know how nice it was

What a day - now it's actually fixed.   We had an unrelated problem with the media server that took down the rating selector.

Note if the rater continues to misbehave, you can still submit a review and modify the rating later.  Just FYI so you don't have to re-type your review.

Chris, it looks like the "h" has fallen off the "Publish" button, again.

Chris

Something else has popped up.  In "My Wines" in my Wine Rack, four wines that were there, yesterday, are not there, today.  Also, in parens in the "My Wines" button on my Wine Rack, the indication is that there are 84 "My Wines."  Looking at the detail after clicking on that button, there are 80.  The wines that are missing are all listed in the "You are tasting. . . ." section of my profile.

Thanks for the reports guys, it looks like the search index has fallen behind.  I'm going to get this fixed ASAP.  Also noted re: the publish button.

I believe that the issue with my-wines is fixed now.   I checked your my-wines @EMark and @giac and they looked correct.

I am soory to say that I am once again having problems with this site.I usually drink a bottle or sometimes two bottles a week and I like tro leave a review for each one but now I cannot.I have tried using Internet explorer on two different computors but the site is not having it.I know that 'Terre de Galets Cotes du Rhone by Gabriel Meffre is on the database because I looked it up before I drank my bottle but now when I type that wine into the box where it says' search 4 million wines' the site comes back with 'error on page'.This is not the first time that the Snooth website has caused me enormous frustration. When is the site going to be sorted out?

I am glad to report that I have now managed to leave a review for 'Terres de Galets Cotes du Rhone by Gabriel Meffre' but I had to google the wine to get the Snooth page to come up and then I was able to write my review
