Eiswein

Have a '97 Sylvaner Eiswein. Thought given the high acid commonly found in this type of wine it might age a little. Might I have already missed the drinking window? Thanks in advance.

emaccardi - the acidity will actually help it withstand age. Thats a 12 year old wine, not young, but some of the best dessert wine (sauternes) can survive for up to 100 years or more. I dont know the make / brand, but it could certainly still be fine

About a month ago I helped drink roughly a dozen bottles of German beerenauslese and trockenbeerenausleses from both the Rhine and Mosel. The labels were so far gone (darkened and disintegrating from damp) that in one or two cases it was a detective puzzle to piece together the vintage and winery, but we weren't going anywhere beyond that table until they were gone, and were thus all up to the task. ;-) The owner was a little embarrassed at the condition, but we were more than happy he was sharing.

All the bottles were riesling, not sylvaner, No eiswein, but they were all from the late '60s through the '70s, and all more than fine. All nine of us walked away from that sitting very pleased.

My guess is that your sylvaner will be better than it was when released to the market, unless storage has been absolutely horrific. What winery is it from?

thanks for the input! here's the stats:
1997 Jakob Bereich Wonnegau Silvaner Eiswein (Rheinhessen, Germany) 375 ml
it's been cellared at a steady 55 degrees since purchase.

Should definitely be fine, now and for years into the future. If you had more than one it'd be enlightening to drink one now and then again five or 10 years from now. As to when to drink your single bottle, I guess it depends on the occasion. If there's a reason to drink it now, go ahead. If you want to save it for some special occasion further down the line, it will likely be even more maturely refined at that time.
