On the heels of Mr. Asimov's NYT article yesterday, a welcome debate is gaining momentum on the subject of printing disgorgement dates on champagne bottles. Will it confuse consumers, as one well known Chef de Caves insists? Or will it educate consumers in appreciating the styles of champagne:
Should consumers be able to choose a youthful, recently disgorged champagne over a maturing or more mature champagne? Will this simple step help weed out champagnes from retailer shelves that are tired and past their best?
