A friend sent me a link to Macchu Piccu and it got me thinking, so I thought we could compile a list of places that are great to view using Google maps:

Magellan Strait? Really? It's only notable because there's nothing there!
As straits go, this is far more interesting:

Gibraltar: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&r...

How about the Syndey Opera House: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q...

And Area 51: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q...

Ayers Rock - Uluru http://search.live.com/results.aspx... doesn't look like much in this view but to stand there and watch the sun go down and the rock go through fifty million light changes is amazing.

What I don't like about many of the west coast shots is that they are straight overhead. I tried the space needle in Seattle and it just looks like a circlular 2 story building... there's nothing that gives you a sense of depth. Transamerica is kind of the same... at least the roof is interesting.

The east coast shots are at a better angle - take a look at the Empire State Bldg:

Damn I was to slow as I was looking for Uluru not Ayers Rock.

For Transamerica, that's actually the sides of the building + the direct overhead view that gives it the cool effect. There isn't really a roof on that building at all since it comes to a point on top.

Mirnyj, Russia. The biggest mine in the world. Open-air, almost 1 km wide, diamond mining:

Your eden project link rather violently redirects to "Cutkive Wood Holiday Lodges‎" in St. Ives, Liskeard.

I love the shadows on the dome. That's one of the best yet!
