Introducing Lists, and Updates to My Wines and Wine Rack

Posted by Chris Carpita, Feb 27, 2012.

Hey Snoothers, we just released a major site update and I wanted to fill you in on some of the new features and changes to your profile layout.

1. Lists

You can build lists of wines on the site now!  Share your favorite Oregon Pinots, build a shopping list, or heck, build a list of wines you hate.  It's a flexible system and I think you'll find it ties nicely into My Wines, which displays lists for each wine and enables searching of list titles.  More about My Wines later.

From the List page, you can also view a printable format.  We'll be doing something like this for articles when we get a chance:

2. Expert Recognition and Top Lists

Are you a certified wine expert?  You can get in touch with GDP to get a badge for your profile, and your lists can be highlighted in our Top Lists collection!

3. Under-the-Hood Overhaul of My Wines

We've made some substantial changes to My Wines, which includes a new backend that updates in realtime with all of your changes.  My Wines Search can now find key terms in your reviews, private cellar notes, and attached list names, in addition to the usual wine info. You can also set your per-bottle value (and sort by it).

There are a few minor changes to the My Wines records:
* Wishlisting is now accomplished via "List It"
* You can add/edit tasting notes inline with the page
* Full set of current cellaring options
* We show the added date for wine reviews (thanks dmcker!)

4. Better Profile Layout

When you're logged in, there will be a new nav item called "My Wines".  This takes you to your new profile layout, which ties everything relevant together in one place.

5. So Where do we go from here?

There are a few aspects of profiles that could be more useful, namely the ability to find other users on the site.  We have some development plans in the works that will address this, and tie the whole social aspect of the site together.  We're committed to providing a useful service to wine lovers, and we crave feedback!   If anything is amiss, or you have any suggestions for improvements, please comment below.

Nice Chris but i don't have exactly understand how List works, i've tried to create a my personal list just to figure out how it works. On the List page  how i can search for a list? If i want to find a specific list, can i do it?

Hey Giacomo, happy to help.  It looks like you did create one list, seen here from your profile: - I noticed you created a list with 4 wines, called "Tocai Friulano".  You can now search the phrase "Tocai Friulano" in your my-wines to bring them up, like so:

We don't have the ability to search your own list names just yet, mostly because it's relatively new and people don't have too many lists.  When the average Snoother has 30+ lists, it will certainly be an option in the future.

Right now, other people's lists can be found via "Top Lists" nav bar, which has many examples of expert/staff lists, and each subcategory "Italy", "France", etc. has a community section on the bottom with examples of related lists.

What kind of lists are you interested in searching?

Right now i don't have a real needs to search lists but will be nice to search lists by name or something else. For example find some expert list about "Mendoza" wines, or "Malbec from Mendoza", etc... or by vintage "Mendoza 2007".

Yes that's definitely part of the plan, as usage of lists increases!

I like how you made the lists which can be printed. It will be useful I am sure. It took me a while to put a new wine in my cellar list becasue it seem the old way is gone. I used to seach the wine on top and then was able to save it after finding the wine. That seems changed and makes it more difficult .

Hey @lakenvelder, I just rolled out a fix for what you described.  Let me know if you have any more issues adding wines.  We're definitely looking to improve the visibility of tools on the wine detail page, but the search tool is definitely useful.

De-listing a wine was not intuitive until I used the ListIt, which is rather cool. So just some initial confusion even with Mark's help. Probably should have take the tour first.

Hey Joey - you can also delist a wine when editing lists in My Lists by clicking the little trash icon on the list item, sorry if it's not visible enough.  Thanks for the feedback!

I really like the recent changes to the site... I liked how we could log in and be at the virtual tasting, without going through another site.  I also like the lists idea.  The other issue I had was cleaning up the wines (when you search a wine), because there were several repeats and gross misinformation.  I will explore that to see if that has improved :-)

Sorry... wine database still eff'd up.  I just entered a Pierce Ranch Vineyards Tempranillo from the San Antonio Valley AVA of Monterey county, CA.  The others on there listed Washington state as the area for the san antonio AVA, and even others had no information...  While there may be a San Antonio, WA (I have no idea), it is NOT an AVA.   Please, please clean up the database!!  (said with love) :-)

Hey napagirl, thanks for taking a look at the site again!  We've done a ton of work with the database in the last year, but as I'm sure you agree it still has a ways to go.  I traced that exact issue to an extraction of "Pierce" which is an ambiguous term, and so this won't happen anymore.   I also set up a cookbook rule for San Antonio Valley, so all of these wines will be cleaned up within the next few days (and more going forward).  If you see any other issues with incorrect Region/Winery information, please let myself or GDP know, and we'll fix it ASAP.

Hi Chris, maybe I am really dim, but I do not see a way to simply add wines to "My Wines".  I am new to this site and looking for a way of getting my existing bottles entered into the database so that I can begin entering my own tasting notes, etc.  Is there a simple way to do this?  Also, what happens if your database does not contain a wine that I own?  Am I able to manually add the wine?  Lastly, If your database does not have an image of the label, am I able to take my own picture and add it to the record for my wine(s)?  The same would go for manually added wines.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Never mind.  I figured it out.  I guess I was being dim.  Still would like the ability to have label images, though...  :-)

Reply by Chris Carpita, Apr 1, 2012.

Hey Craig, thanks for visiting!  Yes, you can set a label image for the wine, although it isn't customizable for My Wines (yet).  On any wine detail page, you can click the Edit link in the middle-top section, and there's an option to upload an image.  Also, if the wine doesn't have a label image, you can click on the avatar and you'll be prompted to upload one.  Hope that helps!

After hitting PUBLISH after posting a forum reponse, automatically redirect to the said forum post stream vs. a little message that says your post has been published.  It is not an obvious message, and invites multiple publications, but you guys may have that issue covered.  I like to be redirected :-)

Spot on napagirl, we'll take a look at that :-)
