Clothing Made of Wine?

Posted by Kate Statton, Jun 11, 2012.

I recently saw this post on Shine for Yahoo! about clothing made out of the skin that can form on top of wine contaminated with Acetobacter bacteria.

This is obviously very funky yet something about it is incredibly interesting as well. It's said to have potential to lower production costs, but you'd walk around smelling like booze all day.

What are your thoughts fellow wine lovers? To what extreme are you willing to take your relationship with wine?

Haha my friend sent that to this afternoon. It is pretty interesting and it is more for novelty than something that could replace actual clothing. At least for now. They have been using food to make clothing for awhile now and they will have to find a way to preserve the food (vege, choc), but well the point was not to make them last. They could however use the fibre of the plants to make clothing. Someone used milk thread to make clothes.. (http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/fashion/qmilch-fashion-designer-anke-domaske-creates-fabric-made-milk-article-1.977851)

In terms of using the wine skin for clothes, it looks fun for a day, maybe for a wine event. Perhaps in long term they will do something like the milk thread.

The bacteria is actually what makes red wine vinegar or just any vinegar, which I am doing at home.

So do you end up smelling like vinegar rather than alcohol??

A mixture of both I guess. They are gel like when they form and the makers probably dry it on their mold to get the shape.

Haha very. It is when fashion gets a little excessive.
