Champagne ... choices!

Posted by John Andrews, Aug 25, 2008.

Hi All,

As some of you know I will be in Champagne for a couple of days in September. I have been attempting to contact various Champagne houses for appointments when I visit. This has proven to be especially tough because the 'business offices' are mostly closed during August (as most European companies tend to do). So what that means is, that while I want to visit smaller houses, all the contact I have received has been with larger Champagne houses. So far I am confirmed for:

- Vueve Clicquot
- Ruinart

And have to make a choice between the following:

- Pommery
- GH Mumm/Pierre Jouet
or
- Moet & Chandon

Which one of these would you go to? Or would you just wing it and see what happens?

MERCI!
John

What happened with Leclerc Briant? The guy's a total eccentric - RBoulanger and I strongly recommend going there if they are open to visits...

Never got a reply from them ... I assume they were on 'August Holiday'. I'll ping them again. :-)

I'd only wing it if I had friends in the area -- then you're more likely to be pleasantly surprised. Otherwise I'd probably do my best to at least have a solid plan even if it ends up being plan B.

You must go to Leclerc. Let me know if you get no response and I'll give you some insider e-mails.

Come on, they hold the Guinness record for largest Champagne flute pyramid in an aircraft hanger:
33,081 flûtes de champagne!

Anyone who wastes 30K+ glasses of Champers deserves to be sought out.

Back from Europe ... only two days in Champagne as I had the small matter of wedding to attend to in Italy. :-)

Had a great time ...
