Central Coast Wineries

Posted by John Andrews, May 19, 2009.

Looks like I'm going to be in the Paso Robles area for a weekend and I'm looking forward to recommendations. If you have a recommendation, please let me know why and what wines you like there.

Thanks,
John

Sorry, didn't see this the first time. I LOVE Paso, I have been to ALMOST every winery (most more than once). I prefer the west side although I do like Tobin James on the east side. I would say it depends on what you are looking for but here are some of my favorites:

Castoro Cellars- has about 30 wines to taste, fee is only $3 and they don't charge if you buy, wines range from $10-$30 and are pretty good.

Zenaida- some really good heavy Zins.

Four VInes- Very popluar, very snooty, very good. They are sometimes sold out of all there good stuff. If you can, be sure to try their "freak show" line, these are my favorites.

Grey Wolf- Has been hit or miss for me. Sometimes their inventory is low. However, sometimes they are having MEGA sales (the wine maker will come in the tasting room in the morning and say something like, 1/2 the Tempranillo all day today) - FYI I love their Tempranillo the best.

Whalebone- Always a fun time with great stories and good wine.

Justin- Long drive, but good wine. A little high priced, except for the port (I always leave with a bottle).

I could go on and on, but am hoping this is a good start, let me know if you want more.

I can't even think of Paso without thinking of Eberle. Not only are the wines solid and fairly priced but Eberle is a founding father of the Paso AVA!

I've never been but am thinking of stopping by later this summer for a several day visit. I'm guessing there might be a few places for me to visit!

John - I LOVE Paso. In addition to Ocean's recommendations, Martin & Weyrich has a great selection across the board. RN Estate is appointment only, but if you like Pinot, it's a must. Carmody McKnight is next door to Justin and their wines are superb. They have an amazing Cab Franc. Dubost is a newer winery with a young winemaker who is making phenomenal reds. If you like Zin, don't miss Zin Alley or Turley. Anglim in the train depot downtown is also excellent. Have a great time. We're going up the 11th - 14th.

John, Did you go to Paso yet? If so, where'd you go?

Well I drove through but there is a problem with drinking like college student the night before going wine tasting ... didn't make to any wineries but definitely plan on going back for a visit before the summer is over.
