Cataluyan Wines

Posted by Maui MB, Oct 24, 2016.

We are headed to Barcelona.  Any recommendations for inexpensive wines would be appreciated.  I love dry reds, crisp whites, and sparkling brut.

Thanks so much!

Hope you enjoy your trip. There are some nice wines to be had in north-east Spain as well as on the other side of the border in southern France.I have been to Collioure and Banyuls in the French side of Catalonia

Some questions:

  • What kinds of dry reds and crisp whites do you particularly like?
  • Are you looking for winery visits, or just wines to consume/purchase?
  • When are you going, and for how long?

Well it's part of Catalunya and Penedès is where they started making Cava, so you're in good shape. Barcelona isn't far from Priorat, so look for some of those wines. They tend to be expensive, but you can find a few that are reasonable. Look for smaller producers of Cava - there's some real good stuff made that doesn't get exported. You can find producers like Recaredo and Mestres in the US, but there are more that you'd never see so I'd ask around. And look for still whites made from those grapes. Xarel-lo is becoming kind of trendy because it has a cool spelling and it's not well-known so it appeals to hipsters, but there's some pretty good wine made from it.

A lot of Catalan wines are pretty high in alcohol - it's a warm region and there's a lot of Garnacha and Cariñena. Priorat wines tend to be expensive so look for some from Montsant or Terra Alta.
