Caribbean Wines?

Posted by sparks1093, Jul 5, 2011.

We cruise to the Bahamas and Caribbean from time to time. Any wines of note from that area we should be on the look out for?

COCKSPUR 14 year old was once my favourite in BARBADOS....so mellow......on ice...a touch of grenadine syrup, a slice of lime...or made into a perfect Rum Punch...called A PLANTER'S PUNCH from colonial days...I call it A PEOPLE'S PUNCH....to change the emphasis in a more egalitarian manner...if you share that perspective...I LOVE PLANTERS AND PEOPLE!!!!!!

Most of all we must love the RUM!!!!

Rum is an interesting drink, in the early days of the colonisation of Australia Rum became the proxy currency.

Interestingly in Australia we have a very strong brown rum culture in Queensland which is tropical.  In fact there is saying that (pm is Rum o'clock when many Qld'ers switch from beer to Bundy [Bundaberg Rum www.bundaberg.com.au]

White Rum - mainly Bacardi here in Aust has widely been drank by younger females mixed with Coke [the cola type]

I am from South Florida so similar area to where you will be (are?) traveling. There are a couple of wineries down here but the wine is made from Fruits rather than Grapes.

Depending on which Port you are sailing out of (Miami or Port Everglades {Fort Lauderdale}) if you have an hour or two break it might be a nice side trip for you.

I have a Carambola here, is a nice different drink.

Is your wine made from the Carambola fruit which is prolific in Guyana?

Yes we get a healthy bit of fruit from the Carambola trees here in South Florida (and all over the Caribbean) and making wine from it seems like a nice use to me ;)
