Canadian wines

Posted by bengel, Jul 5, 2010.

As I joined Snooth, I realized that Canada was not amongst the wine producing countries that you ask about in your signing up questionnaire. This should be amended as I live in a wine producing region of Canada that is recognized internationally but not on this site.

The Niagara wine region (VQA) produces small quanties of wonderful varitels. They also produce some very affordable wines. Creekside Winery, Peninsual Ridge, Tawse, to name a few.

In September '09 we featured a 2007 Pinot Blanc called Konzelmann from Niagara Falls...really good. Nice mineral character with melon and a little bit of lemongrass. It would be perfect with Asian dishes or even shellfish.

I'm actually from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. It would be worthwhile taking a look on the internet for those who are interested. Summer and Winter tourism are quite large industries. Besides great wineries we have amazing golf courses, Okanagan Lake to enjoy in the Summer for boating etc., and two world class ski resorts for Winter activities. Check it out!!!

@Bengel ... search the forums ... we've talked about Canadian wines often.  Myself being Canadian, I make sure to talk about Canadian wines and I make sure that the Snooth guys take care of them.

Maybe the opening questionaire does not cover Canadian wine regions but search on Canadian wines and you'll find tons.  For example:

You can also search in the Snooth Forum (and articles) for past threads, using key words like 'Okanagan' or 'Niagara Bench'. Here's one recent thread:

Best wineries, and wines, in the Okanagan?

Thanks for the information. I had not had a chance to search much through the site yet. Glad to know that the Okanagan is well represented.

I have just encountered the same issue @Bengel.... three years later.... I won't sign up if I'm not able to click PEC as my preferred wine region. Canada has AMAZING wines!

And I plan to bring them into the UK to share :-)

There are many Canadians on here.  I'm in Victoria.  The fact is, we don't produce that much wine.  Of course PEC and BC make some excellent wine, but almost all of it is consumed close by.  Consider a Painted Rock Red Icon (BC liquor store $55) the time it got to a shelf outside Canada, it would be much more than that.  I've asked wine shops in Washington about it and they said the red-tape was ridiculous.

Good luck though!

Thank you for the luck,  Much appreciated.

True, if you endeavour to bring Canadian wines outside of Canada (or even bring them out of their province of origin)...that would be impressive. Please let us know how that goes.

During my research, it is much easier, in fact welcoming to take our Ontario wines into the United Kingdom. This is what my business plan is focused on.

Thank you,

Crazy that it would be easier to ship to the UK than the US, or even perhaps British Columbia! Good luck! It would be great if you could let us know how things work out.
