Buy Wine from Amazon

Posted by 83900ethralls, Sep 26, 2008.

I tried to see if there was already a thread on this but couldn't find one. If there is one, kindly redirect me...: )

I am interested in everyone's thoughts on Amazon taking another shot at selling wine online. On one hand, it makes wine more widely available to more current and future winedrinkers and at pretty low prices. However, with statutory regulations out there still restricting alcohol sales across some borders and some wineries not willing to risk relationships with their closest retailers nor willing to mark-down prices how do you think this works?

Hey enthralls,

Amazon has been working on this problem for a fairly long time and hasn't gotten very far yet. the regulatory hurdles are immense and Amazon is up against some of the most entrenched opponents one can imagine, the regional and national distributors that have a virtual lock on how wine is sold in this country.

It really is good news since no one has had the where-with-all to take on these groups and their lobbies but with the resources of Amazon behind an effort to deregulate or at minimum loosen regulation regarding inter-state wine shipping we might see some progress on that front. Unfortunately this is basically a states rights issue so Amazon will have to conquesr this problem state by state and some state, Utah, Massachussets, and Pennsylvania spring to mind, will most likely never liberalize their policies.

If Amazon does mostly succeed it should be great news for winelovers. Since they will be focusing on nation distribution, or at minimum extensive regional areas, Amazon will have to stock wines with sufficient volume to meet their demands. This may put pressure on many bricks and mortar retailers but will allow those who specialise in sourced Fine and rare wine access to a much greater market than they have now. A boon to their business and those of us who are searching for these limited production wines.

I wish Amazon well in their fight and expect to follow this battle for the years to come!

I have purchased wine from a site wine.woot on severaly occasions and noted they they ship to most states in the US, minus a few that vary based on where the wine is shipped from, the ones you mentioned are always omitted.

Wine.Woot has seemed to be in the same boat as Amazon, though they do not have the same politcal pull as a consumerist giant such as Amazon, they still seem to be doing their part in patitioning the state legislation.

I hope that things work out for the better for wine drinkers every where, seeing as it is just as soon as a good wine comes up for sale that it can't be shipped to your state.

I worked on a contract for a client who was approached by Amazon and asked to be a supplier. Their approach was excellent from a marketing viewpoint, but the logistics of wine as opposed to books or other goods troubled them.
