Bulgarien Rosenthaler Rotwein & Rosenthaler Kadarka

Posted by misty34, Apr 9, 2009.

Hi Guys,Ten years ago is along time to have to wait for England to catch up with the rest of Europe, just to be able to import these smooth and light Bulgarien reds. I'm told English people have different taste's to the rest of europe its all politics. Anyone know of any importers who can bring these in. I am having to bring them over from France at the moment, everyone of my friends say they have never had such smooth wines. Thanks Misty x

Great question - I am looking for Bulgarian wines here in the US too, so any leads on that would be appreciated.

Funny - I thought the British drank a lot of Bulgarian wines... maybe that was just in the 1980s.

I don't remember seeing any Bulgarian wines in the UK to be honest.

I think it was a 1980s thing. Before the Iron Curtain came down, the Bulgarians flooded the UK market with inexpensive Cabernet.

Damn WSET for giving me all this useless knowledge.

Japanese trading companies used to import a lot of grape 'concentrate' from Bulgaria (and Rumania and Algeria) back in the '80s, to help in the making of 'domestic' wine. Import duties on bottled wine were 100% of original costs, whereas were minimal on unfinished agricultural foodstuffs. 'Vintners' to the west of Tokyo would then add yeast and hotwater to the stuff, swirl and ferment, bottle and sell at prices that were relatively lower but still way too high for the quality of what came out of those bottles...

We are going to be carrying the top wines from Eastern Europe beginning with Bulgarian wines. Our site is launching in a couple months and gift certificates are available before that.
