Biz trip to Milano - detour to wine country

Posted by dblessed1, May 19, 2009.

In about 3 weeks, I'll be flying from LAX to Paris, then taking an overnight train to Milano before doing likewise to Munich. I'd like to stop and do some wine tasting in Barolo or Piedmont or even Valpolicella regions. Do you know any of the Euro rail stops or any advice on the best towns to taste?

Getting to Piedmont by train is a pain in the butt. You have to go to Bra or ASti to get a train. If you are heading to Munch you'll be taking the train to Verona and then onto Munich via the Brenner Pass. If you don't have much time I might suggest stopping in Bolzano. The train stops in the middle of town, it's picturesque, friendly and very convenient to many wineries. It's a bit of a different zone than Piedmont but may be more convenient.

How many days were you planning on taking off for wine tasting?

Thanx for responding so quickly. I will be spending a day with friends in Reims, France before my work destination in Pagny-sur-Moselle. Then off to Milano; again one day wine tasting (hopefully before Milano), then another day on the way to Munich (maybe Valpolicella). I'll look up Bolzano to see where that is. I wish I could spend more time, but work is very busy (no recession at my desk!).

Milano to Piedmont is 90 minutes by car, and you absolutely need a car to get around once you are in the region. Let me know what you think once you've taken a look at Bolzano.
