- Australia wine tours
Our family of four will be traveling to Newcastle and Melbourne Australia the first part of Nov 09. We plan on visiting Hunter Valley (Newcastle) and the Yarra Valley (Melbourne) and are looking for suggestions on tours and vineyards in these areas. e-mail rlc27r@aol.com Thank you.

Brokenwood is a must in the Hunter, but sadly they don't let you try the Graveyard Shiraz as part of the tasting. Would recommend indulging and buying a bottle anyway.

Dont take any tours, from Newcastle, drive to the Hunter (+/- 1hr) and make sure the driver does NOT drink... if you go on a tour; you will be taken only to the wineries they guides promote and you would waste valuable time... Hunter recommendations; Tyrrells, Pepper Tree, Brokenwood, Poole's Rock, McGuigan (Cheese factory in this one as well), Tempus Two.
As for the tour in the Yarra Valley, do the same... Yering Station is a must!
As for the wine recommendation, I have tasted the Graveyard Shiraz 2006 and (no kidding) one of the best wines they have ever produced; it is awsome! worth the money...!
taste aged Semillon at Tyrrells, Semillon is "Australia's gift to the World" (Jancis Robinson) and Tyrrells is the best on Semillon...
Poole's Rock is a good bet since they not only have wines from the Hunter and you can taste wines from other regions as well... I was the FC there for many years... I know my wines! :-) good luck and let me know how you go.

I think it is worth pointing out that Australia has a very low threshold for DWI. .O5% I believe, though I may be wrong. Even tasting and spitting one can cross that line so please take the necessary precautions.

We plan on leaving the driving to the Aussies. Not sure I want to attempt driving on the opposite side of the road sober! Sorry Mario Poole's Rock???

Yes, the limit for drink driving is 0.05% blood alcohol content. And they're fairly enthusiastic about enforcing it, so best be careful...

Point out that you are coming from the US (in case, your accent doesn't give it away) and it will be very helpful to mention that an 'old friend' from Poole's Rock sent you there and ask for the "under the counter wines" as all cellar doors keep the good stuff there and only show it if you ask...
By the way, Poole's Rock's winemaker won the "Young Winemaker of the Year" award a couple of years ago... (Enough marketing).
