Any interest in joining a New York City monthly tasting group?

Posted by Gregory Dal Piaz, Sep 28, 2009.

After last night's crowd petered out, well actually in the final moments, there was some discussion of getting together and forming a small tasting group to meet regularly.

Anybody in NYC want to be included in the discussions? I'm thinking once a month or so with a budget to be determined. We can keep cost down by using the conference room here at Snooth and ordering in some antipasto. There are several BYOB friendly restaurants that would not break the bank that would be fun include as well.

Just throwing the idea out there to see what sort of response I might get.

OK, I'm gonna go drink with myself then.

I guess that means more Barolo for me!

I can't contribute any older wines but I'd definitely be interested and would be happy to bring some younger bottles.

You know I'd love to, my only problem is that weekdays are nearly impossible for me due to working out in the Island till 6:30 - 7pm.

Would love to participate, except for the minor problem of a 7,000 mile or so commute... ;-(

Sunday nights, that should give everyone ample time to get here!

I would be interested in Sundays. Sounds like fun!

Very interested. If we each bring a bottle we'd have a lot of stuff to taste, and the cost would be minimal for each.

Sunday nights would be much more possible for me. As long as I have good notice I can keep them free.

Where are you guys located again?

Count me in! I'd love to be a part of a monthly tasting group. Sundays would also work very well with my schedule.

We are located on Madison at 33rd, the Snooth headquarters and conference room that is.

There are at least two ways to do this.

The first would be taking advantage of the conference room and do the tasting here, but without food.

I would prefer if we tried to keep this food related. I drink wine on it's own all the time but really love the way it interacts with food. So dinner would be my preference. We can keep them reasonable but I understand if that's not the way the quorum might go.

Sunday November 1 might be a good time to start this.

What does everyone think?

Unfortunately I live in San Diego or I would love to join you each month. However, as I have appreciated your Snooth articles immensely, if you ever find yourself on the west coast I have some beautiful wines I would be happy to share with you at any of a number of fine restaurants that have a no corkage policy or, at the least, don't charge me.

My wife and I already get together once a month with another couple at different,  very nice restaurants here in San Diego and we always bring our own wines which means we often have to pay corkage. Compared to some of the corkage fees I found in NY during my very recent visit, including a $60 charge at Marea, the typical corkage charge here in San Diego of $15 -$25 seems downrght cheap.

Also, I know of at least 3 first class restaurants in San Diego that have a no corkage fee policy one day each week as well as 10 other very nice restaurants that have a no corkage policy every day if you purchase and bring wine from this one retail wine store in San Diego.

Lastly, I think the $15 corkage fee at Ruth's Chis Steak House in New York is a great deal.

Wow this sounds like a great idea. I guess it would just depend on the date and price. Does ordering out count? lol

I'm following the conversation, and hoping it works out for me join up. FYI, I'm usually not in town Sunday nights. M-T-TH work best for me.

...although I could probably make a Sunday night here and there.

I live way too far from NYC, but I would love to be a part of a monthly tasting.  Anyone live in Northern Virginia that might be interested?

Well, if anyone is interested, I'm going to be opening some bottleshere in the office next wednesday september 14th. It's probably going to be an 8 or 9 vintage vertical of Ch Meyney. It's going to be free for all to attend, the only thing I ask is that you write up the event on Snooth. That might mean tasting notes, a history of the property, or whatever else strikes your fancy, but a little give and take is in order here. If this takes off a bit I'm up for monthly events that could incude some really cool old California sets (all the Diamond creeks from 85-87 or Phelps Eisele vs Backus for 84-87 for example) as well as topics such as 1978 Barolo, 1998 Chateauneuf, or who knows.

If you want to join us a week from  wednesday just let me know so we can make sure we have a spot for you. It's going to be very casual and we'll probably end up liiting each tasting to about 10 people so we each can have a nice pour and wine left in the bottle to revisit.

If you want to join us virtually, we can try and figure out a plan!
