2009 France harvest

Original post by po54, Aug 31, 2009.

Harvest will begin soon in France.
In some places (Languedoc, Limoux, ), harvest already began.
Hot summer, somedays very hot (40°C), quasi no rain since 2 months, grapes are almost "cooked" !
In my place (Tarn et Garonne, France south west), Sauvignon is so sweet that it'll give 12.8° of alcohol.
I propose in this topic to share photos and news from 2009 harvest.
What do you think ?
Ready ????

OK, today it rains ! Very grey and cloudy sky...
Vineyards are thirsty, we also....
Well, rain now is not so good at that time... it should have rained by mid-august.
Anyways, it'll be a very good wine year !

Weekend forecast :
saturday : clouds but sunny
sunday : sunny
Monday will be nice.
My friend at Château Saint Louis http://www.chateausaintlouis.fr plans to harvest monday morning his 1.5 hectare organic Sauvignon. It'll be mechanically harvest.
According to the grapes' sugar, we have 12.8° alcohol.

Sunday, we have a big Harvest party at Domaine de Montels, which is close to Montauban.
A great time of conviviality ! You'll have pictures on monday !

At that time, it's sunny with a lot of wind....
The small rain amount that pourred will dry fastly in the vineyards.
Good for harvest ! The grapes won't take too much water, just what they need.
To much rain will make grapes explode.

Rain at harvest is definitely not ideal. Hope things go well...

Pascal, any more news?

And do they have church blessings of the grapes in your area, too?

Sorry, I wasn't home last week...
I couldn't have news from the vineyards.
I don't think our area grapes are church blessed, I never heard about this...

Thanks Gregory !
Quality is outstanding. We never know for sure how it will turn out, but the fruits show everything we can dream about.
Yields are lower than ever. We usualy do very low yielding, 4 or 5 times less than the tradition in Languedoc (we do between 12 and 15 hl/ha), this year might break our record. Fruits are small. And we had to reject some, dryed. Expect a great 09. And a rare one !

The 2009 Vintage should be good throughout most of France. If anyone out there has some new information (this is a relatively old thread), I'd love to hear it. When I was in France for a couple of weeks last August I could tell that things were going well; there was a lot of "buzz" at the time and for several weeks into the harvest time.

If the 2009 Nouveau is any indication of the what the better Beaujolais Cru will be like (my only tasting of the vintage so far), we are in for some great wine from that sub-region of Burgundy. However, I have heard that there are great expectations for almost all major wine regions in France - perhaps as good or better than 2005.

Comments?

I HAVE BEEN REPORTING THE FIRST INDICATIONS OF THE EXCELLENCE OF THE 2009 HARVEST VERY VERY EARLY IN THE GAME!!
SO THRILLED TO KNOW THAT MY INFORMANTS WERE SPOT ON.........ACCURATE, THAT IS !!

I literally cannot wait for DRC (DOMAINE ROMANEE CONTI) and the ST.VIVANT....what joy awaits us all!
