1971 Chateau Margaux

Posted by myk4ya, Jan 27, 2009.

I was recently given a bottle of a 1971 Chateau Margaux-Grand Vin Bordeaux. I was curious if anyone has any idea as to what this vintage may be worth. I know that 1970 was an exceptional year and there was a decline in the mid 70's, but not sure on the 1971...

Any thoughts are appreciated..

Cheers!

1971 was a good, but not great vintage. Of course, the First Growths produce exceptional wines, no matter the year. I recently had a 1971 Latour which still had a lot of life (and could age easily for another decade).

How was the bottle stored for the last 35 years? How is the neck fill? The condition is going to matter a lot with a bottle like this.

I think Mario's evaluation could be a bit low since I've seen '71 Ch. Margauxs going for $350 to $450.

Thanks for your input- its much appreciated. The bottle was stored in a dry, cool basement. I did notice some residue on the side of the neck that was facing down- is that bad?
Cheers!

Not necesarily - is the residue inside or outside of the bottle?

I assume the bottle was stored on its side. There should be a nice crust of deposit on the side of the bottle that was facing down - you'll want to be careful not to pour this out when you decant the bottle.
