1/4 of a billion bottles per year

Posted by Rodolphe Boulanger, Jun 17, 2008.

Mark - its another astonishing wine stat.

Yes, this is the annual production of Prosecco. The "exclusive" steep and low-yielding Cartizze vineyard, which I have always seen marketed as something truly unique produces a mere 8 million bottles a year. Damn, I'd better hurry to get in line to buy my bottle.

Statistics!

How does such a place get such a reputation, I wonder.

Well bad prosecco isn't too far off industrial ethanol...

Mark, its called marketing. Every Italian adult has to be convinced to drink 4 bottles of the stuff per year!

I'm sure that's a difficult task.

But have you noticed how easy it is to actually drink through those first four bottles once you've started? And does one have to keep a tally?

Prosecco has a time and a place, and that is dinner with my youngest sister in law, who recently graduated from Ballatore.
We're proud of her....

OK, i tracked down the article i referenced - its actually 1 billion bottles worth of wine that got destroyed in Europe alone in 2007: http://blog.snooth.com/2007/06/29/1...

Some 6 years ago, 90% of the wine produced in Sicily (and there were seas of the stuff) were distilled for ethanol under a scheme for EU subsidies.

Found it: by mid 2006, the EU had already allowed the "crisis distillation" 6.6 millon hecotlitres of wine from Frances, Italy, Greece and Spain, or the equivalent to 880 million bottles.
I think quantities have gone down on the program since.

Funny you should mention Sicily - Dan Petroski blogs about his trip there last week on the snooth blog: http://blog.snooth.com/2008/06/19/a...
