Read moreHere's the REALY wierd thing about marshmallow peeps--my mom loves them, but she likes to eat them stale! I thought she was nuts, but I have met in the 10's of people who also like to thiers that way--bizzare.  I really am luke warm about peeps--they were the least important thing in my basket as a kid. Here in PA we have this little candy company called Sarris that makes the best chocolate ever so I always ate that and my Cadbury eggs first. Hmmm what wine should I have with my Cadbury eggs....    (hide)

  August Cellars Marechal Foch 2004

  Great little wine with a wierd pedigree. OK... shouldn't have said "little." It's like a cross between a cab and a pinot... no, I mean it. Tasted at the winery and took home a 1/2 dozen bottles.

I was at dinner just last night talking about some of these ... Cabernet that was just plain wierd. It reminded my of some of the Coturri Zins. High alcohol, VA, perhaps a touch of RS. Just not a usefull wine for me. On the other hand Abe Schoener, the force behind Scholium, has turned out some pretty compelling whites at Vare. The Ribolla Gialla http://www.snooth.com/wine/vare-vin... is very fine and really speaks of the grape while his Bianco Sulle Bucce is a great experiment. It won't appeal to everyong but is very complex in a Radikon/Gravner kind of way. These wines are enough to convince me that Abe has a vision he is pursuing and the abilities to achieve it. Still, based on what I've tasted from Scholium, he has yet to get there. Different strokes for different folks though    (hide)

For some reason I cannot explain they seem to insist ... on exporting all kinds of wierd varietals. Maybe they were told by some consultants that they needed to differentiate themselves from Australia and California. If you have ever been to Cape Town, you will see that the climate is almost exactly the same as northern California. As expected, what Stellenbosch and Paarl produce exceptionally well is cabernet.The most outstanding wines I have had recently are the following:Meerlust Pinot Noir 1997. A wonderful, full-bodied, complex Pinot. I am honestly not a big Pinot fan, with a few exceptions for great Cotes-de-Nuit. This wine competes with those in my opinion.Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon 1998. This is a huge cab. Easily in the same league as all but the very best Napa cabernets. Not the sort of smooth Stags Leap kind of wine, more on par with Heitz Bella Oaks, or Atalon Mountain Cabernet. Fruit forward and long finish, with a bit of tannin kick to keep it interesting    (hide)

I have found the 2005 for $19.99 online, so now I just ... For some reason Illinois has wierd regulations. I usually have no problem getting shipments, but lately have had more trouble. I am pretty confident that 2005 looks to be quite the stunning year for Bordeaux at all price points. I tried out a $17 bottle from a local wineshop and it seems to have the potential to be great in a few years. It was een drinkable now after 45 minutes or so of air.Thanks for the reply, I'll grab some of the 2005 and see how it goes. I'll keep trolling for some of the other 2000 Haut-Medoc bargains if I can find them    (hide)

  I've been fascinated with wine scoring methodologies ever since I stumbled ... about you guys? What wierd ratings have you seen, or which do you trust? How many 'degrees of freedom' for a scale is fair? 5? 10? 200?
