  To use an analogy, I view Sake as the canvas and sushi as the paint strokes. Wines tend to layer paint strokes over paint strokes. Sushi will not serve as a canvas....

  Personally, I don't think any wine goes well with soy sauce, wasabi and ... perhaps, but I like Sake, even beer, or tea with my sushi. There are ways to ameliorate things if we're just talking about sashimi, basically by cutting down on the soy sauce...

  It seems surprising that the sake world and the sparkling wine would have anything in common, but they do - a puzzling obsessive belief that absolute bone dry somehow equals good. I disagree on both counts.

Haven't been to Kauai, but perhaps when I get a decent golf swing, I'll venture there too! Gregory Dal Piaz - Ahh, Kapalua! Lots of things to do there with the new ziplining and adventure programs being built there. Very fun if you haven't tried them yet! And it would be great if I could somehow manage to going from asking about affordable wines to being able to afford a summer wine trip in Maui! Are these tastings at small restaurants or are they larger events at places such as the Ritz in Kapalua? Gooselee - Thanks for the recommendation, and at a very good price! You know, until Snooth, I always thought you were better off not drinking wine than to buy a bottle under $10, what flawed thinking I had....Good luck with your new found passion for wine too! D9sus4 & TLuchese - Thanks, I didn't know about the difference. On that note, have any of you tried Seven Deadly Zins? It was recently recommended to me, and I'd love to hear your opinion on it, or if you have a favorite Zinfandel you perfer over that. And Santa Barbara sounds great, I will have to look into that. For some reason, I would only think Napa and Sonoma, as far as California wine trips go. I also saw a post on the forum about whether or not the point system has gone up. Being new to the world of wine, when in doubt, I look at the score. There are also all kinds of different medals that wines earn. Is this a flawed way to decide on a random wine? If I go by score, what's the lowest I should really consider? Am I also right to presume that certain medals earned are not as indicative on how great a wine will be. For instance, when I pick a movie I want to see, perhaps I'd pay a little more attention to what Roger Ebert has to say over a random jockey from a tiny radio station...? Or is that also flawed, condescending logic? :    (hide)

  I also live in Tokyo and absolutely love sake. I recommend a place called "Sake no Ana" ("the sake hole") in the Ginza area. They have around 130 sakes, fantastic stuff and very knowledgable sake sommeliers (if that is the right expression).

Love how the acidity of the wine cuts through yet complements the sweetness of the crab. Getting hungry over here, Cigarman...    (hide)

  TJ's has been all miss for me with ports and any red wine. They do have a decent sake, though, for about $15. It's rebranded as trader joes, so I don't have details...

On to the tasting… Colline San Biagio Carmignano DOCG 2005 This is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot. Oak dominated this wine, whose fruit was a touch muted. There was good tannic structure and adequate acidity (16) Mauro Vannucci ‘Il Sasso’ IGT 2006 This is an IGT wine but with the same varieties and proportions of the DOCG above - they are from different producers I should stress. This was a big wine. Toasty bacon (probably an oak influence) with slight vegetal characters (from Cabernet?) led to a somewhat hot finish (Its label says it is only 13% alc). (16) Villa Medicea Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2004 Made from 75% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Canaiolo, this wine displayed the classical perfumed nose, with stewed dark fruit on the palate, a nice mouthfeel with good supporting acid and tannins. (17.25) Pratesi Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2006 Another big wine but in which all elements are well balanced. It a 70%/20%/10% mix of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Had some savoury elements within its ample fruit flavours, which I enjoyed. (17.5) Tenuta Pierazzuoli Le Farnete Carmignano DOCG 2005 The 20% Cabernet Sauvignon component was immediately discernible by the presence of cassis and herbal notes on the nose, but on the palate, Sangiovese dominated with cherries and plums. There was a touch of elegance to the wine. (18) Ambra Carmignano Riserva Elzana DOCG 2004 This blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet was most impressive for its length, not to mentioned its structure and elegance. A thoroughly well made wine with dark fruit elements in perfect balance with oak, tannins and acid. Will age well for 7+ years. (18.25    (hide)
