The whole issue brings me back ... doing to put these older, potential fakes to the test. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFnOSx6Ow1w It's a great watch, and highly recommended for those who may be interested in what's being done to investigate the authenticity of the higher end wines on the block as well as some just sitting in collections across the world. Read moreWe took our honeymoon (bike trip) through the Finger Lakes, and have had a ... of money to reach its full potential, but there are some nice wines now. As for reds, think Loire, pariticularly Cabernet Franc. In a good year (every three or four), the good producers will not overcrop, and produce a product that is not weedy or vegetal. They go nicely with light tomato or seafood dishes. We had a Prejean (Seneca Lake) Cabernet Franc 05 that was wonderful with scallops with diced tomato and basil. Match these with the right foods but don't compare these with the California varieties, as these are subtle cool climate wines. The reds are often overpriced, and many are thin or weedy. Pinot Noir can be good.(Try Newland, I believe on the north end of the lake.) Think Volnay. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot generally don't ripen and are best avoided. Surprisingly, Chardonnay does not do that well either. most of them seem light and simple, although maybe not as overoaked as many CA versions. I believe the best producers are on the southeast side of Seneca Lake. But all of them are friendly, with generally free or fairly low tasting fees. Do buy some Riesling and Gewurz. They are well worth the extra money over the the generic $10 WA state plonk from Columbia or Chateau St. Michelle.    (hide)

Read moreHey everyone, I have always thought this blend would have potential, but with very few exceptions, I have never seen this blend pop up. Do you think the grapes are too powerful and wouldn't blend well? The only wine I have seen without completely tearing apart every decent wine holding near me is from Cline. I still don't see it often, and I never seem to pick it up when I do see it lol...So I would like to know what people think of this blend and if there are any decent bottles out there.    (hide)

Some have picked UV to express their dream of making wine. It is truly a splendid mix. None of the super egos of CA wineries. Many are under 1500 cases. Most wine is sold at the wineries where you can talk to the wine maker behind the tasting bar. More than anywhere it's about the place. Drop dead gorgeous. World class fly fishing and uncrowded farmland boarded by forested mountains. Eh, it's just a 3 hour drive South of Portland....come on out    (hide)
