Welcome Newton. Looks like you might need three different wines. The Squash and ginger soup would work best with a rich, white, maybe some thing from Alsace. I would go with a Pinot Gris, many might suggest...

Am in Tokyo for several years now, so tend to view this holiday with particular sentimentality. 10 people for dinner, with staggered arrivals. Tuna and avocado tartare, raw ama-ebi sashimi and a couple of other snacky bits...

Having a bunch of food lovers over for dinner this week and looking for great wine pairings for: squash and ginger soup; braised veal shank with red wine and garlic; pear upside down cake. Any suggestions?

November 2009

Sunnybrook Farm Estate Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake makes some good fruit wines. At Saturday's Taste of the Season event, they served a iced cherry. It tasted like a prize-winning pie. The mix of cherries made it...

The Barossa Valley clearly provides a consistent array of pretty impressive stuff - although admittedly, the chocolate mousse intensity of some highly extracted Shiraz examples from the better vintages can be tiring on...

Very good with food. Alone it is a bit acidic and tart for me. leaves tongue feeling dusty and dry. Med body. I bought 2005 vintage

Tittarelli Reserva de Famila Tempranillo

Starting at $15.67 Snoothrank: 3/5

For the price this is a nice little bottle with a light nose of cherry cough syrup. It's tart and has a bunch of acidity, it's a bit more sweet tasting and flabby than I usually like my pinot.

MacMurray Ranch Central Coast Pinot Noir 2007

Starting at $16.84 Snoothrank: 3/5

Super light cherry and cinnamon nose. Nice fresh cherry flavors with a good fresh lively acidity and a bit of tartness leading into a creamy finish with a touch of cola.

Matanzas Creek Winery Pinot Noir 2007

Starting at $30.99 Snoothrank: 4/5

Green olives on the nose layered with cherries and a nice herbal note. Great depth and complexity. Very sharp throughout, with a tart finish. There's more green vegetal flavors on the finish, which also has a slight...

Seasmoke Cellars Ten Pinot Noir 2007

Starting at $94.99 Snoothrank: 3.5/5

I didn't enjoy it much personally, as I prefer stronger wines, but the wine has a lot of character and complex flavors. Nice tartness with raspberry and blueberry notes, a touch of sweetness, not very tannic.
