Read moreThe island of Madeira was hit very hard by Oidium and Phylloxera in the late ... The maligned RED Tinta Negro Mole, a vinifera, was replanted in many sites. It is still the basis for most basic Madeira. In the 1970s and 1980s, the traditional 4 noble styles: Sercial, Verdelho, Bual/Boal, Malmsey/Malvasia were resurrected somewhat and plantings of those 4 WHITE grapes have been on the rise. Hat's off to the government of Portugal eventually outlawing hybrids and changing appellation laws to protect this historic wine treasure. Now that we've established the context, there are many "historic" styles of Madeira that have been all but lost during the crises of the last 150 that saw wholesale replantings mutiple times and the number of shippers drop from 30 to 20 to 6). The two best examples were based on the noble WHITE Terrantez and RED Bastardo grapes - they are extremely rare. I believe Terrantez had some real trouble with American rootstocks at first and was almost wiped out on the island. Moreover, it has a reputation as being a pain to grow and has super low yields like Viognier - again you try getting the Madeira farmers to grow it! Fortunately a miniscule amount survived extinction and its acreage is on the rise (same story as Viognier) . Terrantez makes sweet grapes so in style its somewhere between Bual & Malmsey. But wait, nothing in Madeira is ever simple - Terrantez can also make rich, dry wines that fall somewhere between Sercial & Verdelho in style! It has characteristic burnt, bitter, coffee and even salty notes which you guys mention in the tasting notes for the 2 Terrantez wines above. A sizable number of Madeira enthusiasts insist that Terrantez is the greatest Madeira grape so we should be thankful that it is on the rise again. Maybe our grandchildren will be able to enjoy the fine 2020 Terrantezs in the year 2095! Oh, and in case you got all that, there are some more lesser grapes grown on the island and put in blends (but you'll almost never see them on the label) including Moscatel, Listrao, Complexa, and Triunfo    (hide)

  I liked this wine. It was an excellent compliment to some spanish food. It ... fruit to get through a spicy mole. its not a burgundy, but it is better than most $20 US chards

Flight 1- Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel ... chocolate, almost like a mole” notes and Stephanie’s comment on the “waxy kind of blackberry fruit”.  On the palate it was liked though Karl felt I was “not a deep wine but jammy in a good way” Elizabeth found it “friendly and approachable, very jammy with obvious sweetness”.  Both Greg and Stephanie commented on its vanilla laced jammy fruit. My third place wine. 1st place - 2005 Howell Mountain Vineyards Beatty Vineyard Napa Valley 15.6%        $35-40 This was our winner by a fairly wide margin.  Everyone had something positive to say about the nose from Karl’s “ Leathery and strong, this smells delicious” to Julie’s “smells like complex, dark fruit cake”. Stephanie found “bark and soil tones” while Natali noticed a “smoky, cinnamon thing going on”.  In the mouth Clayton found this to be “ accessible with nice spice and earth, well balanced” while Greg commented on the “core of deep red cherry fruit” and Julie capped off the discussion with the succinct comment “ this warms you up!”.  My fifth place wine. And that was all we had to say. We brought the remainders with us to dinner and they went very well with our fine Cuban meal. Another successful, enlightening and, dare I say it, warm evening spent with the fine people that makes Snooth Possible. As we look forward to the Holiday season and beyong keep an eye out for our coming Panel tasting featuring California Syrah, Chianti Classico Riserva, and Wines from South Africa and Australia!
