The tannins are medium, ripe and noninvasive, contributing to the roundness of this wine with an exceptional finish that makes you ask for more. With a beautiful aftertaste of figs and licorice (and an illusion of sweetness), this wine is a statement of uncompromising quality and certainly has the potential of entering the very seductive league of wines you can easily fall in love with at first taste    (hide)

Antonius brings up a majestic nose of black berries, marzipan, tobacco, cherries, rosemary and smoked plums against an impressive background of vanilla, truffles, black pepper and dark chocolate. The oak bug (this one is barrelled for 26 months, like a serious Barolo) is present, but not invasive, this wine has one of the most delightful bouquets that I have ever experienced with a single 5 year old cepage. Great attack too (nice, smooth tannins, black cherries, licorice, figs and red currants with a very pleasant earthy note - this is an extractive wine just like the good old Languedocs whose tipicity it resembles to almost confusion). The aftertaste is long and warm, almost like a big time Amarone, but not there yet, come on, it'd've been too much for its more than decent price, quality-wise    (hide)

We can certainly continue and many will argue that wines are being made better than ever but the theory behind the 100 point scale has always been that the rating are a numerical rating relative to the peer group. If that was truly so then the wines would tend to remain around their original point scored as the overall level of quality increased. The fact of the matter is that there has been grade inflation and compression over the years, for whatever reason and that has made point scores less useful, for the moment I'm not getting into the discussion about their utility. On the bright side I think we have pretty much reached the apex of point inflation, at least until someone goes over to a 110 point scale.    (hide)

I found there were hints of spices lingering at the tip of the tongue. Unusual. I accompanied it with roast chicken (poulet de bresse). The Margaux was terrific with the poulet    (hide)

The decision between cork and screwcaps has ... the major British retailer, Majestic Wine, is quite a bit. Majestic has enabled a feature that allows online customers to search for their wine by closure (your choices are: natural cork, screwcap, synthetic cork). Personally, I can't remember the last time I wanted to hunt down bottles with synthetic corks, but with Majestic's comprehensive search I can happily avoid them. I'm sure it's not something that all of their customers use, but it is nice to know it's there, just like their 'Browse by ABV (alcohol by volume)' feature. So feel free to judge a wine by its closure or ABV, if only because nowadays, you can.
