Read moreYes, have a similar group, most of whom are studying for one certification or another. My best tip (not rocket science, I admit) is to find a wine seller that you trust and who has a good selection. We'll give that person our theme and pricing guidance and let them pick and wrap the wines, so all of us can share in the blind tasting experience. We've done themes such as "same country different grapes", "same grape different countries". It adds another element of learning (aka frustration) if you're trying to figure out what grape you're tasting, as well as where it comes from. Much harder than you'd expect, but great education to discuss among the group why each person reached the conclusion they did.    (hide)

This one is full bodied and fruity, with lingering flavors of tasty sweet things like chocolate and jams. As a sipping wine it is just too much before a meal, but not necessarily during or after. I could see this being a hit in a big wide open glass beside a bowl of cream bisque of crawfish or lobster, seasoned with fresh basil and black pepper, floating croutons pan toasted in butter; grilled sausage bursting with cayenne, garlic and cumin (maybe a link of boudin); pulled pork slowly smoked in a crust of dried mustard, celery seed and sea salt, over just a few chips of shagbark hickory. This wine, at its price, has a place at the table.    (hide)

  Coenobium Bianco 2007

  Enjoying this wine for a second time... Great provenance, good acid balance, a touch of tannin from the hand pressed stems and earthy notes lent itself well to our dish of Italian pasta, olive oil, spinach, mushrooms, pine nuts and Parmesan!

Read moreNo vineyards in Scotland to my knowledge, at least not producing grape wine (there are various elderflower/dandelion etc. 'wineries'). Scotland is the Mecca of whisky. Speyside (mostly Aberdeenshire, so Edinburgh is not too far away) has the most distilleries per square mile. Google 'malt whisky trail' for plenty of info. If you can make it, I recommend the world's smallest distillery, Edradour, not far from Pitlochry. Best distillery tour I've been on. If you want more info, you can PM me. And as a Glaswegian, I must insist that the best nightlife, music and culture in general is in Glasgow. Edinburgh is a tourist trap, although very beautiful for it. To be specific, last night’s wine and food experience would not have happened but for such a situation. Yesterday evening’s dinner was prepared and served by private chef, Gary Mularski of Dining Chez Vous. It was “payment” for watching Gary’s new dog, a young female Labradoodle named Reagan. Reagan met us at the door with tail wagging and wet dog kisses. We told Gary that his offer of a personally prepared gourmet dinner was a grand idea. However, I volunteered that he had to let me bring the wine (wink, wink). There are nice notes of dandelion, pigskin, dry earth and licorice that add nice detail to the fresh black cherry fruit. In the mouth this has such purity and real finesse. It is clean and polished with a great core of mineral tinged black cherry fruit, superb length and a sleek, refreshing feel. It is elegant; a touch simple and perhaps even delicate by Barolo standards but is pure joy to drink. Each note is so precise and clear here that you don’t need any more complexity to be completely satisfied. 94pts    (hide)
