But I still think a powerful (if expensive) Cakebread Cab would actually go quite well with chocolate cake - if the cake is not too, too sweet. As to the German sweeties, they only work with the lighter style of chocolate; red icewine (yes - it does exist) will definitely go with most sweets - including chocolate. Unfortunately, no Cakebread icewine and not likely to ever be any - unless a satelite winery is started closer to the Canadian border...    (hide)

  If you guys are talking specifically about wine with chocolate, I've never found anything I like, with the possible exception of a Cahors Black Wine, or fortifieds like a Banyuls or certain ports. Read moreIf you guys are talking specifically about wine with chocolate, I've never found anything I like, with the possible exception of a Cahors Black Wine, or fortifieds like a Banyuls or certain ports. I'm serious about my sweet wines, and chocolate, but find they both detract from each other when combined. Distilled liquors are a different matter (which may explain why fortifieds work so much better). To me a good German BA or TBA, much less Auslese or Spatlese, would be devasted by the chocolate attack. But we all have variations in our body chemistry, so maybe it's just a personal difference in my makeup.... BTW, I think the original post starting this thread was merely a query after a specific Napa cab (Cakebread) she'd forgotten the name of. Not that I can complain about contributing to thread drift... ;-)    (hide)
