Read moreSouth-west France is an area I have visited and it is gorgeous.There are also some lovely wines to be had for modest money and there is so much variety both in terms of terroir and grape varieties.I am surprised that our intrepid Greg from this site has not been on a tour.Corbieres is a very nice red wine with plenty of fruit and a hint of spice.I have reviewed one called 'Les Sarmentieres for Snooth and I have also recently had the Rothschild version'Blasson D'Aussieres.Fitou is a similar wine from the same area and the Mont Tauch co-operative makes a very good one.The area around Toulouse makes an unusual red wine called Fronton from the Negrette grape which is also fruity but has a flowery or herby taste.I recently had one called Domaine le Roc Cuvee Reserve which I thought very good.I have had a wine called Les Verrieres de Montagne from the Coteaux de Languedoc which is a fruity syrah dominated blend.I thought Domaine de la Rectorie from Collioure was a quality red wine.I have had a couple of Madirans made from the tannant grape but these tend to be very tannic.There are also some very good white wines.I thought that Domaine des Montesquiou Grappe D'Or from Jurancon was a sweet desert wine as good as a Sauternes although made from a different grape entitely the Petit Marsang.Another good sweet white is Domaine de Barroubio from Muscat de St Jean de Minervois    (hide)

  So, when we found out we would not be sending our older daughter to private school, we decided to celebrate by taking a long trip to Europe this summer.  Our flights put us in Amsterdam June 29 to July 1 or so, then we land in Rome.  We depart from Paris July 19 or... Read moreSo, when we found out we would not be sending our older daughter to private school, we decided to celebrate by taking a long trip to Europe this summer.  Our flights put us in Amsterdam June 29 to July 1 or so, then we land in Rome.  We depart from Paris July 19 or so.  The rest is left to be filled in.  It'll be my first trip back since '88 (ouch!), when I spent 4+ weeks in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and France.  No Italy in there; went to Avignon and could consider returning, but not an absolute must.  Also did Epernay and Reims that trip, and probably could save the return to Champagne-land for another time, too.We're traveling with two pre-teen kids, so extended wine tasting is not in the picture.  But planting ourselves in the countryside for a week somewhere along the way is.  (Tuscany? Piemonte? Umbria?) And somewhere in there, we'll stop in Switzerland and visit a few friends.  (Guess I better try some Chasselas soon.)So, wine-loving, world-traveling Snoothers, throw some ideas my way.  Where to eat, stop for wine, cities you would see more or less on that route.  Keep in mind that we will try very hard to NOT have a car, using trains and walking as much as possible. Pretty broad mandate, but ask questions and I can narrow a few things down. One thing I am strongly considering is ambling through the Loire--I know, kind of touristy--so recos on places to stay and ways to get around (probably not bicycles unless it's really short each day) are especially welcome.    (hide)

Read moreFirst of all, THANK YOU to all the Snooth regulars who have been honing my skills and experiences with wine in general. I have learned so much from this forum, from trying as many wines as I can humanly and conveniently afford, to posting tasting notes online. This brings me to the second point.. I was invited last night to have dinner with the owner of the only Spanish wine distributor in the Philippines, the Ambassador of Spain and his wife, plus the export managers of Bodegas LAN and Bodegas Fontana. I will be reviewing six of their wines, so we had the following along with food to match:Estella Galicia beerVallformosa Claudia (muscat), '10Vinas del Vero (riesling), '11Cuatro Pasos rose (tempranillo), '10Ponte de Boga (tempranillo), '08Quercus (tempranillo), '06Bodegas LAN Gran Reserva (tempranillo, garnache), '03 I did feel obliged and honor to mention to these people that my wine skills - as young as they are - hails from the experts and mentors-of-sorts from Snooth.com :) They were very appreciative that I started in the culture at a very young age (I'm only 23), and I was even more touched when I was gifted a Bodegas LAN Crianza '06. Just like that, my tasting notes and experience increased by six in one night.So thank you, Snooth.com and the kind people who are helping me in my journey of wine appreciation, collection, and experiences. I am currently working on my website, which will have a section on my wine tasting notes and escapades. I owe a lot of what I know to you guys, thanks again.    (hide)

Got about a dozen cases moved closer to home, so now I'm pretty well set for the next few months of drinking! Next bottle up looks like it might very well be 1987 Dunn Napa Valley. Funny how Dunn was on the backburner until recently. Nothing really changed witht he wines, but a new California Critic 'discovered' Dunn so he's popular again. Anyway, that was a lie, first up are a dozen 1979 Barolos on Wednesday night!    (hide)
