  cherry, cranberry, with a little earthiness and spice on the nose. Tinges of spiciness and earth on the palate with the cherries and layers of red fruit intertwined through, nice tannic structure, delicate and delicious.

Dense raspberry and candied cranberry fruit, exotic spices, seamless mouth feel, nice finish. Read moreYes, Zufrieden, France is certainly the home of CF and still, to my taste, too, the source of the best CF. I've only had a couple of CFs in the past from the Niagara area, and they were extremely disappointing. It sounds like there are a lot more out ther now, so it'll be interesting to see what else might appear in this thread. California CFs are a different breed from the French, as you so aptly describe. I've had a lot of Chinon (many quite delicious, while the lessers are, yes, too herbaceous), and some of the delicious Cheval Blanc (of recent American fame from the styrofoam cup in a diner in Sideways, where the Giamatti character drowns himself in his favorite bottle--hilarious to me because of all his previous moaning about the horrors of merlot, where Cheval Blanc can have nearly as much merlot in it as CF). And innumerable other bottles from Bordeaux where it has been a lesser part of the blend (and that's basically how I've tended to view the grape, as good in blends, which can take care of the hollowness you describe). But I try not to think too much about them when I drink New World CF, or I'm too often dissatisfied. I try to enjoy all that fruit and think about the piece of Napa, or wherever, that it's from. One thing I like about the Soter that I mention above, is how it's blended with cabernet suavignon and malbec. All that meatiness, coffee and chocolate, cedar-and-spice box from the CF, but also the black fruits, flowers and structure that come from the malbec and CS. It's no Cheval Blanc, but a very interesting effort in its own right.    (hide)

  intense and concentrated red fruit aromas of cherry, strawberry, and cranberry. Cherry flavors with underlying earth tones on the palate, dry soil characteristics, riper pronounced tannin structure, nice balance and length

  Domaine Chandon Pinot Meunier 2007

  Snoothrank:

  red fruit intertwined with an earthy, brambly vegetal like aromas, and the bountiful flavors of red fruit evolve on the palate - cranberry, pomegrante, raspberry with some exotic brown spices, nutmeg. Softer tannin structure than a Pinot Noir, but still shows complexity.

Read morePurchased on sale for $40 at the winery during a wonderful sale, this Cabernet had superb aromatics that reminded me of a top-flight St. Julien like Leoville Las Cases. Dark currants, cranberry, black cherry, and subtle violet-like floral notes highlight the complex nose. Structured very like a top Bordeaux - less weighty in the mouth and much less alcoholic than some of the bigger Conn Valley Eloge's of recent years. Perhaps it lacks a bit of grip compared to those bigger wines, but it is still a sensational Cabernet, especially at less than 1/2 the cost of current vintages. It's drinking great right now and will continue to do so for at least another 10 years.    (hide)

Read moreA touch of VA, black cherry, gamy, leathery, a bit of brett but instantly identifiable as Burgundy with a lovely sweetness to the fruit brought out by the background notes of bitter and medicinal herbs. All wrapped up in modest, but taught structure one finds medical toned wild berry/cranberry fruit with notes of earth, creosote and braised mushrooms. This is already complex though youthful and shows a bit of wood on the backend, as well as a lovely hint of stemminess. Those stemmy tannins really come out on the finish and give this excellent focus from entry to finale. A fine bottle of Burgundy. 90pts    (hide)
