Read moreI shipped 12 bottles from South Africa during a recent visit where I tasted and loved this. I wanted to bring it back to the US to compare with some California zinfandels. This is only one of very few select wineries actually making zinfandels in South Africa, yet the climate is perfect for this varietal. I received my shipment about a week ago and was VERY disappointed after the first opening. I used a mechanical aerator thinking this would help open it up...yet found it very tannic and almost bitter to the taste. I was warned to let it sit for a couple of weeks (or months) before opening as red wine does not travel well. I left the glass I originally poured sitting (full) next to the kitchen sink...and when cleaning up a few hours later tried it again...and admittedly it was MUCH better. So proper aeartion might have been the key. I will let the remaining bottles sit and try it again after a month or so...and leave it sitting for an hour to open up after opening.    (hide)

  Beringer Knights Valley Alluvium Red 2004

  Very full, smooth and silky on palate with low tannins. Drank immediately after opening without any aeration. Cherries and vanilla galore.

  Griffin's Lair 2006

  A bit dull in appearance and oddly, in addition to the ripe red fruit, I found some fresh dough as well. Some spice and tangy acidity, I found this to be just a bit too tight. Needs a bit more aeration to appreciate or, ideally, more time in the bottle. Like five years or so.

  Let me sum it up this way -- I've had better "2 buck chuck". It's possible that ... that I would do better to aerate this leathery red for at least an hour. Be forewarned, if you do not decant the consequence is tannin overload

  Kruger-Rumpf Munsterer Dautenpflanzer Riesling Spatlese 2005

  Medium lemon color. Medium aroma intensity. Very mineral, apricot fruit, wet wood, florals, malt and cow manure. Medium sweet with high acidity. Low alcohol and light body. Very mineral, apricot fruit, wet wood, florals, malt and cow manure. Medium sweet with high acidity. Low alcohol and light body. Medium intensity of apricot, minerals and blackberry flavors. Medium length. The wine benefits from aeration. The aromas develop and take on a much earthier note than the initial mineral/apricot scents. The aromas of this Riesling are very complex and I must say I love that hint of cow manure. It reminds of driving through the countryside on a bike. Aromas and flavors are very well balanced as are residual sugar and acidity levels. It is still very young and I am looking forward to tasting this again in 5-7 years.    (hide)

  That's a great point: Something like the Vinturi can be used to aerate a wine rather than having to decant the whole bottle.
