Read moreNo more challenging than in other sparsely populated areas, but the selection is limited, especially French and Italian. But the state does take back corked bottles, regardless of when you bought them. When I buy mail order from Zachys, Brown Derby et al, I consider corked bottles a cost of doing busineess, as the offending bottle was probably bought several years in the past. But back to topic, buy the Brandborg Riesling, or the Brooks Riesling. The latter is not Umpqua, but is available from the Oregon Pinot Noir Club.    (hide)

  I've had good luck with Zachy's over the years. Nice selection, and helpful staff. I've stocked a lot of of my Bordeaux and Burgundy from them, not having ready access here in WY. Be careful with winter shipping. When in doubt, tell them not to ship. Record heat in the east usually... Read moreI've had good luck with Zachy's over the years. Nice selection, and helpful staff. I've stocked a lot of of my Bordeaux and Burgundy from them, not having ready access here in WY. Be careful with winter shipping. When in doubt, tell them not to ship. Record heat in the east usually means record COLD in the west, and I had some arrive at -30, under this scenerio. Luckily, I picked it up right away, and no frozen wines. I am confident they would replace frozen wines, as they are a reputable outfit. They have been featuring some good sales recently.    (hide)

Read moreLooking at the shelf talkers and the magazine ads, e.g. Zachys, Premier Cru, the ratings of Bordeaux, Barolo, and other wines do not seem to vary that much. That is, from my casual, admittedly unscientific observation. Parker and Wine Spectator ratings for a given wine are usually fairly close (wihin 3-5 points). That said, one may not agree with either of them, as there are whole classes of wine that I do not like, and to my tasting, do not merit even 80 points. Best to ignore ratings, unless you like that style of wine and are aware of the biases of the reviewer.    (hide)

Many of the prices are so much higher than retail that even with the sale they can often be beat. The free shipping, if you read the small print, is on bottles over $100. Having said that I did set my sister and her family up with enough wine to last the rest of the year. The live in Westchester so delivery for them is almost free and there are deals to be had if you shop around. They have an acceptable Alsatian selection.    (hide)

  I've had some really bad experiences with them to be honest. They shipped me a case of wine, in which several of the bottles were flat - they were all old and or badly stored. When I complained they wouldn't replace them. Basically I'll never shop there again, and would advise you... Read moreI've had some really bad experiences with them to be honest.
