  • My father started the tradition when my nieces and nephew were born.  He did it for my daughter too with a 1981 Cabernet. Now she is having a child and I'd like to continue the tradition.  I know it's still early for 2010 wines, but I thought I'd get this started. Any recommendations for a 2010 red wine that should age WELL for the next 21 years?... • What's the worst wine you have ever had? I had some Don Luciano Shiraz over the weekend (which is a $4.00 wine I picked up at Wal-Mart...just to see). I had had the Don Luciano Chardonnay and it was OK, but the Shiraz I had smelled like road kill (very heavy sulfur)--I wonder if I got a bad bottle.  Has anyone else tried it? Read More

  • Boekenhootskloof the Wolftrap Red Blend Coastal Region 2007

    Snoothrank:

It is a deep full bodied red, just what you would expect from South Africa, but the Viognier gives it a playful openness that I really enjoy.Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of the oldest farms situated up the "Valley" in the Franschhoek foothills. Marc Kent is the wine-maker, cellar-master, and part owner of this homestead and wine farm... Read More

  • Hey everyone, what's the buzz in the US right now about buying Bordeaux 2009 En Primeur?I have never known a vintage to be so 'talked-up' by the press.  Investors are hanging on to Parker's index fingers waiting with drooling tongues and wagging tails for it to spout forth its Midas touch.  This is THE vintage of the last 100 years folks.  Broke... • South Africa will have its moment in the sun this summer as legions of football fans (the one played with a soccer ball) descend on Cape Town for the World Cup finals. While the World Cup is a global event with tremendous impact and appeal, my thoughts can’t help but drift toward the amazing scenery that surrounds Cape Town, and the renaissance ... Read More

  • So this past Friday, I hosted a tasting of sauvignon blanc.  I tried to show the most popular areas, taking into account readily available options for most shoppers.  I hit the major producing areas, except for South Africa. All in all, New Zealand won out as they always are a favorite of mine and the rest of the "panel" agreed, finding them to ... • Everyone has a favorite "just for fun wine"--one that you drink because it just tastes good. These fun wines are great to fall back on for parties or just enjoying at the end of the day. I had a great "fun" wine this weekend from Debonne Vineyards (Madison, OH) , Razzberry Riesling. The Raspberry brought out the flavors of the Riesling nicely an... Read More

  • I tried to search for a forum about this but I couldn't find one, even though I'm sure there is somewhere. Put simply, I am extremely confused about French Wines - I know they don't put the varietal on the label but that's about it. How do you know what you're buying? Can anyone give me any details or direct me to any good references about this ... Read More
