  • I've just returned from the International Malbec Days in Cahors, a festival meant to elevate the profile of "original" Malbec, and offer insight into the relationship between old world and new world expressions of the varietal.I'll be writing more about both the trip and the region, but for now, I wanted to offer highlights. I had limited exposu... Read More

  • I asked in another thread about recommendation for the Okanagan Valley area of British Columbia, but now I'm asking for up-to-date stories about an area closer to (my) home. I have a family gathering in The Ojai/Santa Barbara area next month, and was wondering who has recommendations about particularly good wines and winery visits in that area t... Read More

  • I grew up on a farm.  Farmers kill themselves to survive and we support each other by buying locally.  I am from CA and I have been drinking wine predominately from Napa, Sonoma and Carneros since I was 21.  The point is, when I am studying for this WSET exam and being told that the best expression of every premium wine is found in some AOC in F... • I'm curious: Do you order half bottles in restaurants, or ever purchase them for home consumption? I've started to notice them cropping up more frequently in my area (a wine bar just opened in my neighborhood that boasts a half-bottle option for nearly every wine on their list) -- and yet I always feel the urge to either order by the glass, or c... • Hello Snoothers.I'm rather new to wine (less than a year of experience), and I noticed I have yet to try any italian wine. I'm looking toward trying a good Barolo (the tasting notes I've read on most Barolos seem to really appeal to me). Does anyone have any reccomendations for some producers to seek out in the $15 to $30 range that are decent? ... Read More

  • What's the worst wine you have ever had? I had some Don Luciano Shiraz over the weekend (which is a $4.00 wine I picked up at Wal-Mart...just to see). I had had the Don Luciano Chardonnay and it was OK, but the Shiraz I had smelled like road kill (very heavy sulfur)--I wonder if I got a bad bottle.  Has anyone else tried it? Read More

  • Hi, I only recently found this website looking for a way to start trying new wines. Being from Vitoria, in the Basque Country (northern Rioja DO), I've grown drinking rioja crianza reds (Piérola and Luis Cañas are my favourites). I´m marrying an australian soon and since I went to Oz for the first time in 2001 to visit her family I´ve started gr... Read More
