  • I would like to say I have read a lot of posts and find more of these fascinating than not. I have been trying to educate myself about wines, not because I indulge but because I have inherited some wine from my fathers estate and want to part with them, The research I have gathered is minimal and somewhat frustrating at times.I have some very ni... • Old wines you decant mostly for sediment, IMO.  Too much air can kill them.  Unless it's old Barolo, which needs decanting to lose the funky, dirty smells.  Young wines also want decanting to open them up, but sometimes they need days and days.  Better just to let them rest, although we all succumb to our infanticide impulses now and then.Wines ... • I'm of the mind that decanting is a good thing. Especially with aged wines. I've decanted young wines anywhere from an hour to up to seven hours just to see how the structure would differ. And I've done the side-by-side comparisons to justify my insanity. However, I do realize, as in with stemware, that this may be an extremely subjective topic.... Read More

  • Picked up some old standbys to plug some holes in the wine racks:The 2014 & 2015 Marques Cabby bu Concha Y Toro.  I've had every vintage for a couple of decades now except for the 2013 - found it the other day and am going to order it.A 2014 Chateau Pesquie - Ventoux Grenache/SyrahThe 2015 M. • We talked a lot about sparkling wine last week but there is a lot more to cover. The biggest sparkling wine day of the year, New Year's Eve, is right around the corner. Opening a bottle of sparkling wine can be a a dangerous proposition. There's a lot of pressure under that cork! But if you like living on the edge, there's always sabrage. When t... Read More

  • OT, takes one to know one!BTW, that '09 Brunello is one to jump on now, too.  That vintage is more forward and riper than my typical choices in BdM, definitely not for the cellar at this point.  But it's Lisini, and they don't bottle it as BdM if it doesn't meet standards, so it's going to be tasty with a Bistecca Fiorentina or some rabbit ragu.  Read More

  • Just back from Chablis with a few thoughts. The first is that the Chablisienne should try and find another name for Petit Chablis. I often hear wine enthusiasts say it’s “Chablis that didn’t make the grade”, “from young vines or poor vineyards”. Sadly, this is not surprising as the name does suggest an inferior wine but after two days of tasting... Read More

  • RBA-I had a similar day yesterday. A little shopping, house work and football. And of course wine! We have had this 2010 Fifty Row Cab previously and it's a winner. The 2010 Napa vintage is drinking very well now and right in our wheelhouse. Strong dark fruit on the nose.   Blackberry with a  touch of blackcherry as it glides across the palate. ... Read More

  • Just revisited an old favorite movie. One of the better uses of wine in it, in ways that further the plot along nicely. Very intelligent director and script writer make replacement of an accidentally broken bottle with the wrong vintage lead to exposure of enemy action. Nice oldskool wine cellar, too.I'll post some photos below and see who guess... Read More
