The Norwegian Wine and Spirits Monopoly

Vinmonopolet has the exclusive right to retail wine, spirits and strong beer in Norway. The products are purchased through importers holding the required read more...licence for import.

A key element in Norwegian alcohol policy has been to remove the private profit motive from sales of wine, spirits and strong beer. As a result, Vinmonopolet is entirely owned by the state.

Eliminating the profit motive gives Vinmonopolet room to manoeuvre in meeting key social objectives, such as securing responsible social control of sales, as well as maintaining operations completely neutral, in the sense that no favouritism is shown between brands, producers, countries or suppliers. Procurement is determined solely by price, quality and customer demand.

Vinmonopolet has had an exciting and engrossing history. Its creation, for instance, was virtually imposed on the Norwegian government by France in order to ensure stable distribution of wine to all parts of the country.

Vinmonopolet offers a unique range of roughly 10 600 different products today. The most popular of these are available in all its shops, while those not in stock at one outlet can be ordered without additional charge. This system allows the company to serve both the majority of its customers and the wine connoisseur.

One can have different opinions on monopolies, but this is indeed one that is working well. As a wine customer I have had nothing but good experiences. The selection available for order i fantastic, and the service is also very good. Full money back policy for any wine fault or slightest defect, is just one example. The fact that they'll import wine for you that is not in the selection, is another one. Knowledgeable staff in every outlet. Because of the monopoly, I can't say I have much to compare with, but I think this is an excellent operation.
