We’re occasionally teased about our susceptibility to the ‘new-best-friend’ syndrome when it comes to wine. In that we’re quick to fall in love if the right bottle comes along, we’re guilty as charged. What’s the right wine? Simple, one that, in the course of tasting through hundreds of wines, sticks out strikingly on account of its superior quality, fidelity to the region from which it comes and, yes, a pretty sharp price point. If a given wine meets these three criteria, it becomes a ‘favorite’ and we’ll not only recommend it enthusiastically, but often regularly take it home for ourselves. Of course, over time we adduce quite a number of ‘favorite,’ so in compiling the list below we’ve set a few additional restrictions, namely: 1) it must be readily available and in some quantity (regrettably DRC won’t make the cut, then) 2) it must be reasonably priced, comfortably under $30/bottle and, finally 3) it must, bang for the buck, be best in show relative to its peers. – Description from dvoristanac

  • Hey NapaloverThat Spain trip sounds like fun. I'm just a beer guy, but my wife likes cream sherry. She was buying rot gut supermarket shelf bottles and I'm putting a stop to that. There's not much sherry available in St. Petersburg, Florida, so I ordered a few imported bottles through ABC wines and spirits to try. A night and day difference. I s... Read More

  • I think we need a checklist to refer to when out on the town and having a good time.  Lots of good recommendations posted so far.  My personal experience is that mixing wine and spirits can give me a headache the following morning, as does drinking too much the night before (excessive alcohol consumption).  I really should drink more water thoug... • I don't know if anyone else here has a taste for Calvados, but to me it's great stuff and a favorite, ever since I first ran into it at a working class zinc bar in Paris as the shot accompaniment to a demi tasse. Soon graduated to the better stuff, drunk after dinner most frequently, but even as an aperitif (and an accompaniment to oysters as I ... Read More

  • Just got this from Adam Lee. Meeting up with eMark and Foxall Monday for dinner. Should we change venues and do this? Not at all familiar with what Virginia has to offer. Hey All, Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but wanted to invite all of you in the Santa Rosa area to a tasting of Virginia wines that we are hosting next Monda... • So we have some interest in having a West Coast meet-up (or you can call it a throw-down) for Pinot.  Here's my opening proposal:  We'll do it very close to the Oakland Airport, to save those who are traveling in from out of town (like Emark and JonDerry) from having extra travel if they want to fly.  This would give LuchaVino a chance to attend... • Hey all,  I'm really just getting started with wine but i've been drinking/tasting seriously for about a year now. I will be graduating in a couple of weeks and I figure it is a good opportunity to buy my first batch expensive bottles since normally i dont exceed $25 in my tasting.Since it is my graduation, excessive drinking is likely to take p... • I noticed that OutThere purchased seven bottles of a particular wine at $14 and it occurred to me that it was a $100 purchase, and enough to last about a week.  So I got curious, and mentioned in the thread that it would be interesting to know how much per week people spent.  Well, Emark has better records and more time on his hands than I do, a... • I used to spend a LOT of time on snooth, but a job assignment took me away for awhile.  I am seeing some new faces, and some old.  As one who is catching up, I would like to hear from some new people here.   I think/hope we all share not only a love for wine, but a desire to share our experience.  Welcome, new Snoothers! • Everywhere I turn, I see people talking about 2010 in the Rhone (both north and south).  Lately, I've been on a mission to taste a lot of these wines and so far I've found some good, some bad and some that really would be better poured over pancakes.  In some cases, I've agreed with some of the wines being pushed by the "wine critic illuminati"....
