Long discussions with my grandfather, and my own dedication to the well-being of the earth, inspired me to act as ambassador for organic wines. Therefore, nearly two decades ago, I founded Organic Wine Company, thus importing the first French organic wines into the United States. Meanwhile, my brother Dr. Michel Ginoulhac, took charge of the family property, making our wines and helping to bring to life the region's Organic Growers Association (AIVB). The Languedoc region has since become the largest producer of organic wines. With the continued expansion of the market for nutritionally Read more »

  • Montalcino is a beautiful medieval hilltop village just 40 miles south of Siena, on the ancient roadway to Rome. It is dominated by a castle, called La Fortezza, which doubles as an enoteca and wine shop. La Fortezza offers most of the wines of the zone, plus older vintages, as well as honey, olive oil, jams and the like. It also offers a breath... Read More

  • Hey, I hear that VTs are coming back, with one scheduled for March!  Not to steal the thunder, so I won't leak what the region/grape is going to be (regulars, watch your mail boxes if you live in the US), but it's going to be good if my inbox is any indication.I'm opening up the floor to ask the question, "Who do you think will be the host?"  Ma... • After much agony and discernment, I have chosen the official wine for my Super Bowl party this year. Over the 9 years I've hosted this event, it is probably the least exotic selection, not to mention least expensive.  Given the fact chili is the main dish (oh please, don't turn your nose. After all, we're American pigskin fans, not Bolsheviks), ... Read More

  • I once spent 48 hours making a sauce from scratch. It was a classic Sauce Robert that started with a tray full of bones and vegetables. The compound sauce required demi-glace, the rich reduction of beefy goodness that takes a lot of time and effort, and I was determined to use no pre-made ingredients. At the end, gallons of liquid and pounds of ... Read More

  • Yalumba Organic Shiraz 2012

    Snoothrank:

Austere and powerful black fruit aromas of black currant, bramble fruit and blackberry, with heat and spice in equal amounts and a commanding presence. In the mouth it's equally commanding, showing deep ripe blackberry and black currant, tree bark, forest floor and sticky tar with gripping tannins and good acidity. Would stand up well to grilled... • So I just started a wine tasting class a couple of weeks ago in college as an elective course. I am learning a lot about wine, and recently aeration, so we have been using decanters to let Cabernet Sauvignon breathe, which does get better after some minutes in the decanter. I felt like it also improved a lot an Argentine Malbec young wine. But ea... Read More

  • It being earth day tomorrow I thought this would be a fine time to explore attitude towards the whole organic/natural/biodynamic movement. I reached out to some wine professionals to get their opinions about these wines, but before I turn the stage over to them I’d like to explore the situation briefly. Before we consider the value of these wines... • Carignan AKA Mazuelo, Bovale Grande, Cariñena and Carignane, is, for most wine lovers, a bit of an enigma. We know it’s out there, component in many blends, particularly from Spain and France, where it was the most widely planted variety in the country through much of the 1980s. But what do we really know of Carignane? Not so much because there ... Read More
