For years Pam and I were frustrated trying to find truly great wine. Selecting a decent bottle of wine from thousands of pretty labels with prices ranging from $5-$35 was difficult at the best of times. We were always happiest with wine recommendations from friends. So, that's what we wanted to do with The California Wine Club, start a wine of the month club that was just like "one friend recommending a great bottle of wine to another friend". We are now celebrating 20 years of business and the wine adventures keep getting better! Pam and I knew that there were hundreds of small, family-owned wineries dedicated to producing exceptional wine ... and it was this wine that we wanted to share with our monthly wine club members. Each month we travel California's wine country searching out the wineries, meeting the families and tasting the wines that never make it to local stores or wine shops. This is why it was so easy to guarantee that our wine of the month club members and gift recipients will never receive Read more »

  • I am a new wine lover. A year or two ago I was having troubles staying away from 'the sauce'.  It wasn't alcoholism, per se, but it was getting to the point where I was spending much of my money and getting very little done. So, being that I am working in a fine dining restaurant, Carnevor Steakhouse in Milwaukee, WI, I decided to begin studying... Read More

  • "I look forward to living one day in a state where I can actually get access to a wider range of wine. The selection of California wines available here in Texas is more limited than you might think based on the size of the market. Getting products from smaller producers is quite difficult. I might be willing to pay for formal, broad-based wine a... Read More

  • The principal advice I can give you is to relax and enjoy your wine experience. There is no such thing as a mistake when you are new to wine. Ok...perhaps mixing it with Coke or leaving a bottle in a hot trunk for 3 hours are bona fide mistakes. Yet purchasing a new bottle is not so bad.Just as I do with scotch, you could gather a group of frien... Read More

  • Ojai Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley Bien Nacido Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Hint of lemon on the nose, maybe a bit of caramel. No lemon on the palate, more peachy or melon but with no sweetness. Very dry and refreshing. Nice acid balance. Good food wine. Happily, much closer to Burgundian style than California style. US$23.00 from Winery Club. Read More

  • My family and I are brand new to wines, having bought a couple of books and deciding to make a bit of an adventure out of this. We live in a smallish town and haven't been able to find a good local wine shop, so we sort of started in our grocery stores. It's been a bit overwhelming, a bit expensive, and finally kind of frustrating trying to find... Read More

  • Okay, couple wine bars in SF:  Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant in the Ferry Building.  Decent retail operation, too. Rouge et Blanc on Grant and Blanc et Rouge in the Embarcadero--different operations, confusing enough, but both run by outstanding restaurateurs and sommeliers.  (Emmanuel Kemidji is the somm at R et B.)There's also RN74, a restaurant b... • Saw this story about Antonio Galloni leaving the Wine Advocate.  (I first saw it somewhere else, but this was the easiest one to link to today.)  I haven't got any particular sense of what Galloni likes, although one kind of assumes that Parker would hire someone somewhat in his own image if he was planning to turn over some of the areas Bob has...
