  • I got so excited about dolcetto this year, see my report on The Return of Dolcetto, that I almost forgot about Barbera!  I love Barbera. It’s a rich wine, though too often spoofed up with too much oak, but when you find an example that focuses on the fruit you get a wine that is bursting with mouth cleansing acids, rich with plummy fruit, and li... • What D said. It's really not that tacky. I sold wine to a lot of restaurants in NYC. A couple times I took wine makers to dinner at restaurants owned by a guy who has a few really good restaurants and great wine bars. He will have something for everyone because he's a wine fanatic. But we still brought our own. I thanked him profusely every time ... Read More

  • Hi guys:I was at a local wine and liquor store today; I buy quite a bit of stuff from them but don't really know any of the staff. It was quite warm and I was out running errands. I decided to stop by and pick up a few bottles of inexpensive wine (sub $15) that I can use in part for cooking.I guess maybe my hand was a little sweaty or something ... Read More

  • Just finished tasting Ballabourneen The Stuart 2013 Chardonnay (Australian Wine Selectors Hunter Valley Series January 2014 dozen), bottled under screwcap. Supposed to have a "round and subtle biscuity finish" Well the bottle I tasted was way to subtle for me I'm afraid! I think it is due to last week's tasting of the Tapanappa  2008 Tiers Picca... • Perhaps we could use a place to share recent purchases...Here are some '12 Burlotto Langhe Nebbiolo, which came highly recommended from a trusted friend who just got back from a month in Italy. I'm not seeing many available in the States quite yet, but was happy to find these locally. Read More

  • Below are some good online wine purveyors I've dealt with very successfully over the years. They have provided well-curated wine selections at good prices, processed purchases well, and shipped efficiently (though not all internationally). I'm throwing their names out with multiple aims in mind:to see if anyone has good or bad experiences to sha... Read More

  • I don't utter those words easily (homemade wine). Personally, I think it's crap and that there's no such thing as GREAT homemade wine.I was wondering what some of your stories and/or responses are with and when offered said crap.I occasionally am offered a bottle (because wine may come up in conversation with acquaintances or clients) and I resp... • I've whined about wine prices here before...but it bears repeating that it's pretty bad - especially for American wines. It is really worth going down over the border to buy wines there. Even when I return with more than the allocated amount (which I do all the time) and pay the extra $ in duties/customs....you're still not behind in terms of th... Read More

  • I have not been back to China since a lengthy visit prior to the changes instituted by the once disgraced Deng Xiaoping (you can do the math).  The idea of a bustling wine industry such as currently exists in Hebei Province was nothing short of  apipe dream at the time of Mao's death in 1976.And given the socio-political changes in the interveni...
