  • I posted this as a reply to another thread about travel shock, but that thread never got bumped up to the front page, for some reason. Guess I'll have to start a new topic, as my curiosity remains unsatiated. So I've done my reading on the subject (http://www.wineloverspage.com/dibbern/shock07.phtml, et al) but I'm looking for any anecdotal evide... • Made a trip to Pahrump Nevada today to play a round of golf with my friends at Mountain Falls GC. Amazing course! Rated #1 in Nevada and the #7 public course in America. Who would have thought a course that nice could be located smack dab in the middle of basically no-mans land.Because the trip is 45 minutes from Vegas, I decided to visit the wi... Read More

  • Basically, they just bottle before fermentation is finished and let it continue in the bottle. Bad wine makers do it all the time. If you do it intentionally, you have to learn when there is just enough sugar left to convert so you get just enough bubbles that won't blow up the bottle.  Based on the brix and the yeast, you can kind of figure out... • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one of each. This is a rose made from Cinsault, not too unusual right? Well this is from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Either they don't make very good wine in Lebanon or this bo... Read More

  • I'm putting together a blind tasting of sparkling wines, ideally with all four methods of sparkling wine production represented.Trà linh chiThere are, of course, lots of examples of traditional method sparkling wines to choose from (Champagne, Cava). Same goes for the Charmat method wines (Prosecco).Where I need suggestions is the transfer metho... Read More

  • Sandra and I were fortunate yesterday to attend a quickly sold out (57 minutes after the e-mail went out to the RdV Ambassador members, it was fully booked) 'Introduction to Blind Tasting' class at our favorite Northern Virginia winery, RdV.  Getting our two slots in this class was tough, as we didn't call them until 5 or 6 hours after their e-m... • I have been trying to find info on wine terminology. Im lost everytime I visit the wine section and read the reviews as I dont know what they mean.  Please help. I enjoy red and whites that are not very sweet and not dry and that I can drink 3 sips at once without  having to pucker. Not as sweet as Beringers white zifandel  and not as dry as Mir... Read More

  • Emark - it's the anniversary of the founding of the site and many producers offer special pricing and deals to the members on that day only. Sometimes it's free shipping too, but it all depends on the producer and their finances. It's a good day.Almost all will be CA wines, and if memory serves, mostly Sonoma and more southern CA wineries. If yo... Read More

  • Due to popular demand (don't ask where that demand came from or you'll spoil my fun), we appear to need some new wine discussion topics.  This topic was only relevant to Thursday as a test case but was subsequently expanded to cover the weekend too.  What ever you bring up in this topic should either occur on a Thursday - Sunday, or it could be ... • I don't know if anyone else here has a taste for Calvados, but to me it's great stuff and a favorite, ever since I first ran into it at a working class zinc bar in Paris as the shot accompaniment to a demi tasse. Soon graduated to the better stuff, drunk after dinner most frequently, but even as an aperitif (and an accompaniment to oysters as I ... Read More
